I never thought my family would eat this soup, but I made it for something different. No one complained, which is a good thing...I didn't use any butter...Didn't think I needed it.

My husband & I love soups and could not get over how fantastic this was-my brother-in-law keeps asking me when I'm going to make it again as we gave him some to sample. He said it was the best he has ever had. I added more celery & carrots & only did 2 qts of stock. I also cooked it for a good part of the day. Great going Paula! A little fat does not hurt anyone-it's not like your going to be eating this for a month. It sure was GOOD!!!!!!!!

Great soup

Rich and savory - I loved it! My mom's friend cooked it up for us during this cold week and it was the perfect thing to warm me up after school!

Thank you again Paula! My husband who doesn't even like Split Pea Soup, adored this. I used the Jimmy Dean BOLD sausage (I think it's new), and it added so much flavor, even more flavor than if I had put a ham hock in. This recipe made a lot for 2 people, so I'm going to try and freeze some to enjoy on another chilly night. We like things a bit spicy, but if you do not, don't use the BOLD version of the sausage.

Best split pea soup I've had!

This soup was terrific! Perfect flavor and I loved the fact that my kids ate it, too! A little prep time and leave it alone except to stir occasionally, very manageable! I considered blending the soup to make it smooth, but am glad that I left it alone. This is the best recipe and can't wait to have the little that was left for lunch at work tomorrow!

A great Fall or Winter recipe!

I usually make my split pea soup with a ham bone - this recipe was just as good, if not better! The sausage/bacon was a good substitute. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

I could not help but laugh when I read one poor soul put a whole cup of salt in this soup

For the people who gave this recipie poor ratings for the amount of salt, please take note when paula tells you how to make the "house seasoning" it does not mean you are going to use it all in the recipie. You keep it on hand like other spices and use it to your taste. Any cook worth their salt (pun intended) should know Paula is not intending for you to use a whole cup of salt in this recipie. Come on people a little common sense goes a long way.

wonderful and rich

This is a very simple, rich soup. I did not even pre soak the split peas. I just let the soup simmer a little longer, and it was great!!! I had a ham bone that I used instead of the sausage, and I hed never used bacon in my split pea soup before. What a no brainer--it was delicious!!! I really enjoyed this recipe.

Too salty.. omit Stock add Water

The soup was very tasty, however, found it very salty.. by using the ham, sausage, and seasoning that is enough salt. Also 1C of salt sounds like alot in the seasoning. I didn't use that much and it was still very salty.

Tasty,Tasty!

This was a very tasty soup. I made some changes. I cut this recipe in half, omitted the butter, small diced the carrots, used the greater amount of chicken stock since I don't like very thick split pea soup, added a bay leaf and the last hour of cooking I added a potato diced small.

Why so much FAT?

I just don't get bacon, butter and sausage all in one recipe. Way too much fat. I usually will cut the fat in Paula's recipes, but come on Paula start cutting the fat.

Way too much fat. Between the bacon and sausage that's all the fat you need. The half stick of butter just adds calories and grease.

Have not made yet

This sounds yummy and I hate peas and will be making it in the near future. I just dont understand people, do they ever watch her cook ? She doesnt put a cup of salt in there. And even if they did not see her show come on a cup of salt ? When would you ever want that much salt in something. Come on people have more common sense than that.

cup of salt

I'm glad the guy from cincinnati called attention to the "poor soul" who added a cup of salt to the soup. The really funny part was that she said that " one C of salt sounds like alot (sic)" You think?!! Maybe common sense should play a large part in following any recipe?
