I've been on a weight loss "program" and am transitioning to maintenance. The one thing I've missed is the "crunch" in texture. These Salmon Cakes provided that PLUS lots of flavor and easy prep. My husband enjoyed it as much as I did.

Enjoyed it!

I love this lady!! i trust everything she makes is healthy...but soooo delicious. I had to "modify" this recipe simply because I didn't have all of the ingredients. I used the canned boneless and skinless salmon. If you ony want six cakes, here's how: 2 cans (7 oz) salmon. Flake in the bowl. I added two slices of whole grain bread, processed to crumbs. I added three scallions, Old Bay Seasoning, Lemon Pepper, 1 egg. Perfect combo to keep together. The variation of the sauce I made was delicious: 1/4 cup mayo, 1 T. Stonewall Kitchen's Sesame Ginger Teriyaki Sauce (marinade and dipping sauce), squeeze of 1/2 lime, and slight Splenda (you can use honey) to taste. I served these by squeezing lime on each cake, and topped each cake with a dollop of the sauce.....yummmm

Salmon cakes are delish, skip the sauce!

The salmon cakes were delicious and easy to make. However, I really disliked the sauce. Additionally, the soy sauce in the ginger sauce really ups the sodium content of the dish - I omitted the soy sauce and made a dill sauce with fat-free Greek yogurt, fresh dill, and fresh lemon juice instead. Like other posters have mentioned, use BONELESS salmon - I used the bone-in canned salmon, and it was AWFUL trying to de-bone it and get all the icky stuff out. But overall, it's a great recipe!

Absolute best salmon cakes ever. I don't always make the sauce, depends on what I have taste for, but the sauce is excellent for many other dishes as well as this one. My family could eat this 3x a week and not get tired of it depending on which sauce I choose to use and if we eat it as an entree or a sandwich. I've even used them in a panini with great success.

Tasty!

My husband and I love these salmon cakes. I change it up sometimes and substitute celery and parsley for the water chestnuts and cilantro. We've added them to our regular menu.

This is a great recipe for a healthy version of one of my favorite fish cakes, with the added benefit of Omega 3's; very tasty & if you are too lazy to make the ginger sauce try a little Chipotle Mayo instead for dipping. I also squeeze some fresh lime juice over it when serving.

Fantastic Taste!

I made this recipe for the first time for my family and guests. I made it exactly as written and it was a smashing success. I was surprised by how good it was. My guests asked for the recipe. Everyone had seconds. I had no trouble finding nonfat greek yogurt at my supermarket.

Great Salmon Cakes but not Sauce

We absolutely love these salmon cakes and you would never know these are actually healthy for you. I use 3 cans of the skinless boneless Salmon and then 2-3 eggs depending on the bread I use for crumbs. Other than that I make the Salmon cakes just as the recipe indicates and they are perfect every time. Like many of the other people we don't care for the sauce at all but these are great on their own or with a dijon or mild chipotle sauce.

This recipe is great. We love crab cakes but how great to get the same yummy treat with the nutrition of salmon. One reviewer mentioned having trouble with the cakes falling apart--different slices of bread will result in different amounts of bread crumbs. If your cakes are not sticking together, mix another egg and add some slowly until they do. I used a whole grain bread with flax seed for added nutrients too!

overall really good BUT no matter what! DO NOT buy the salmon with bones and skin still on, it took like 35 mins to do it and by the time we finished we were so scared of accidentally chomping down on a bone we didnt even enjoy it, such a shame b/c it was really tasty!

The salmon cakes and sauce were fantastic. I used skinless, boneless salmon to save time and added corn instead of water chestnuts, since I didn't have any. The sauce was easy too and in my opinion, really made the dish special. I served the salmon cakes over orzo with some stir fried bok choy and red bell pepper on the side. My husband is not a fish lover, but really enjoyed the meal and said I should make it again, and even my 1-year-old ate it enthusiastically - a rare event! So I definitely recommend this recipe, it's a winner on all fronts.

GOOD SALMON CAKES - SKIP THE SAUCE!

I thought the salmon cakes turned out good but I have to say I thought the ginger-sesame sauce literally tasted like vomit. I love ginger and was hopeful I would like the sauce but it was very very gross. I will however make the salmon again - it was very quick and easy and tasty.

I'm not a fish eater. Don't like the "fish" taste. But thought I'd try this anyways. I'm glad I did. Hardly a fishy taste at all. Actually my daughter said it tastes more like chicken. The sauce was good too. I will use only half the required sesame oil next time though and maybe just a smidgen less ground ginger. Great way to get yourself and your family to eat more fish!

Pretty good!

Not a bad use for canned salmon! for a healthy recipe, this had very nice, mild flavor. For the sauce I used light mayonnaise, added a touch more sesame oil and soy for flavor and a squeeze of lemon juice.

I've made this recipe twice now and just love it. I really like the texture of the water chesnuts and the taste of the cilantro. I added an additional egg white the second time and the cakes held together much better. I haven't tried the sauce because I always top my salmon cakes with molasses.

As a man married to a woman who hates fish this was a god send. It did not have an extreme fishy taste and was easy enough to make even for a novice cook as myself. The blend of herbs and spices was perfect and easy to find at the local store. Thanks again as now my wife is willing to at least try other fish recipes.

Just OK

These were alright, nothing special, definitely lacked flavor. I didn't see vinegar in the recipe (reviewer below), but maybe that would help! Or soy sauce (or something). Lemon squeezed over at the table saved them somewhat. I have only made salmon cakes one other time, and they were delicious, but were made with fresh salmon (and mashed potatoes). Cooking procedure and method work great though, don't need a lot of oil or fat.

This recipe is quick and easy to prepare. The ingredients are all fresh and compliment each other. I had to substitute apple cider vinegar for the rice vinegar and sweet onions for the scallions, without detriment. My husband raved about not only the flavor and texture, but also the zing the ginger added to the sauce. We also enjoyed the Asian-Style 3 Bean Salad with the salmon cakes. These are definite keepers.

This was pretty good and the kids loved it. I'm just not a "cake" person I guess. The taste was okay, I thought the sauce had WAY to much ginger and I used less than the recipe. You have to spend the $$ for the pre-boned canned salmon. WHAT hassle digging the bones out. I wonder what it would be like with fresh salmon.

Really Fantastic

Interesting twist on salmon cakes

I enjoyed this version of salmon cakes. I, too, mash the soft bones and add to the mixture. They'll mash between your fingers, and it is a huge source of calcium. I used a couple of whole wheat buns instead of the bread because that's what I had. I soaked them in a little of the salmon juice from the can and added to the mixture. I learned that from my grandmother. I appreciate the new twist on an old favorite of ours.

healthier way i use canned salmon
03/04/2007 at 01:58pm
User: paula from LAS VEGAS, NV    User Rating:
Your instrucion to remover the bones & skin from canned salmon is removing the calcium supplied by the bones. They are so soft that they can be mashed up and add additionl nutritioal value to any dish made with canned salmon. As far as I am concerned I concider the bones as an extra treat in the can of salmon. I wish they would pack the salmon with extra bones! Taking out the bones reduces the benefit of that extra calcium & the skin is not even noticed when the salmon is prepared. Please research the benefit of the bones & the value of them for added health to the dish. If possible, would appreciat a reply to what I stated above. I am a loyal Food Network viewer and find it bothersom to cheat people of the calcium to add to the value of what I feel to be providing mis-information to your viewers. Lets keep it even healthier!

I just made these tonight and my boyfriend said these were the best salmon cakes he has ever had! I wasn't crazy about the sauce, although he really liked it. I think I will try it without the sesame oil next time. These were great. I'll definitely be making these again!

This was delicious and I gave it a four because I added some changes to mine. I used Aunt Millie's Hearth All Natural Honey and Crunchy Oat Bread. The flavor of the bread and the Salmon made the recipe for me. Delicious. I also added about 1 tablespoon and a half of honey to the Ginger Sauce. I felt the taste of the Ginger was too over powering for the sauce so I needed something to calm it down a bit. My husband loved it so much he ended up eating 3 Salmon Cakes at one time. Thanks for such a great recipe. It's a keeper for us.

This recipe is so tasty-fabulous, but I used scallions in mine instead of cilantro ( I'm just no cilantro fan..) The creamy ginger sauce is great too. I served the salmon cakes with the asian three bean salad recipe that was also shown during the airing of this recipe. And you know what? The dressing from that served as a good sauce for the salmon cakes too, as disvovered by my 8 year old! Oh and to whoever was looking for a sugar free AND fat free plain yogurt...dannon makes one.

These cakes were easy to make and they were absolutely delicious! I'm not crazy about ginger and I'm on the South Beach diet and was unable to find non-fat sugar free yogurt, so I made a modified version of the sauce. I used fat-free sour cream instead of yogurt and left out the ginger. It was very satisfying!
