This is so easy to make, and if you make a double batch and freeze however much you don't want in plasticware, it will keep for weeks. It tastes best if you let it sit for a few hours or overnight after it's fully cooked. Kids love it, my husband makes it with my daughter all the time.

Fabulous and fresh

It was fun to finally be able to give my kids "sloppy joes." These were full of healthy ingredients that I was able to buy all organic. My 5 and 8 year olds both loved it! We ate it with the cucumber salad. One of the best parts was how fast and easy it was to make. Thanks Elie, keep it coming!

My family loves sloppy joes, but have you ever looked at the label to a can of store bought sloppy joe mix? You'll never want to serve it to your family again! Ellie's recipe was outstanding and has the added benefit of beans (I used pinto). I'm adding this to our "Family Favorites" cookbook.

Spot on recipe for producing the traditional taste of sloppy joes. We used some ground elk intead of burger for our base to reduce the fat content even more, but otherwise followed the recipe to a tee. My wife says it's a do-again.

Mine was a little bit bland. I used more meat so I should have used more of the other ingredients. I will try it again. I liked the idea of adding the beans for fiber. This was like chili but I did not add the jalepenos. Carol

I don't believe in "diet" recipes. Normally, I find them to be not worth the effort it takes to make them. However, I decided to take a chance with this one. Well, I have to step back and rethink my stance. This was really good! My son prefers a very slight sweetness to tomato based sauces so (as weird as it seems) I threw in a couple of packets of Splenda and that seemed to make it work for him. And now that I've finally cooked my first recipe from the Food Network, I'm sure many others will follow.

I've actually never made Sloppy Joes before. After watching Ellie's show, I was inspired to try them and to make healthier foods for my family. Initially my husband was not exactly thrilled at the thought of having Sloppy Joes for dinner. But he had to agree that they were very good. My children enjoyed them also, especially as they had never had Sloppy Joes before. Ellie's Sloppy Joes are a delicious and healthy alternative to In-n-Out burgers! Thanks Ellie!

I'll never use the canned stuff again. My husband is picky and I know he would have lost his appetite after seeing whole beans in his 'Joes so I pureed them in my food processor and mixed in the bean mash to the filling. He was none the wiser. Also, I realized at the last minute that I had run out of molasses, so I used a tablespoon of dark brown sugar instead. Delicious!

Delicious!

These had a wonderful flavor and it is just as quick as something that comes out of a packet. The reason I gave it 4 stars was b/c the filling would not stay on my bun....I think by mashing some (or all) of the beans and making sure you dice the oninions and pepper small it would help remedy that.

Crowd pleaser

My whole family LOVES this recipe! I reduce the amounts of garlic and jalapeno, and the kids gobble it right up. The joes have so much flavor, and aren't overly salty like pre-made sauces usually are. A much healthier version of a comfort food classic!

This is a very good recipe! I made this for dinner and my wife and I enjoyed every bite! It has a great deal of flavor and I will make this again. I also like the idea of adding beans and red peppers to Sloppy Joe?s. If you like heat added to your food, I recommend sprinkling some hot sauce on top of the Sloppy Joe?s.

I made this as the recipe stated and found it to be good but not great. I really didn't enjoy it on a roll really so I put the leftovers in the fridge. The next day my dh put some over a baked potato and took it for lunch. Still good but not great. The following day I added what I had leftover to some jarred spaghetti sauce and served it on pasta...wow! It was great. So much so that the next time I made spaghetti which is weekly around my house my dh asked if I would make the sloppy joes to use in it.

I hadn't eaten sloppy joes since my childhood. This is a guilt-free recipe in terms of caloric content. I omitted the tomato paste since I blended some fresh tomatoes in with sauce. The molasses is key in netralizing wine vinegar and worcester sauce and gives it a real zing. I did add a teaspoon of margoram as my only addition. Delicious. I've already made again.

This is a good solid recipe and a satisfying meal. It's soooo close to being just right, but it just needs a little something to kick the flavor up. A little more vinegar perhaps, for more tang. Haven't figured it out yet, but I'm sure it's just one tweak away from perfect. Will definitely make it again and keep trying - it's almost perfect!

User: Laura from Irving, TX    User Rating:
This was delicious. It will become a staple in our house. My husband and I both enjoyed it. I took it the leftovers to work and my co-workers enjoyed it too! I made a couple of modifications because I didn't have enough tomato sauce, so I supplemented with 1/2 cup of ketchup; also we used maple syrup instead of molasses. I'm usually a big fan of beans, but I found them to be strange in this recipe so next time I will leave them out.

Tasted just like regular sloppy joes. I left the jalapeno out, didn't think my kids would like it. Loved that this is a healthy version with vegetables and the pinto beans! Better than coming from a can! Served with chips and the cucumber salad. I would make this again.

I rarely make a recipe "as is" an don't alter it at least a bit, but this is one that is perfect as it is. If you're looking for a healthy way to eat a sloppy joe, this is the way to go. It's kind of odd eating beans in it, but it's a great way to get them into your diet. We serve it "open-faced" on whole wheat hamburger buns. It feels like we're cheating!

Great!

This version of Sloppy Joes is a great alternative to the canned Sloppy Joe mix. If you don't want it to seem too healthy, you can use white bread buns instead of whole wheat buns. This recipe has good flavor and I will definately make it again. I paired my Sloppy Joe with a nice side salad (and a small portion of chips!)

I followed the recipe omitting the jalapeno pepper b/c I didn't have one. I used kidney beans b/c they were in the pantry and my family loved it. Personally, I feel that the red pepper is a must for texture and the sauce was pleasing, not too sweet or too tangy. Even my picky husband said I should make this again!
