These scones rock 07/03/2008 at 09:01am User: Ronald from Grand Rapids, MI User Rating: If you are looking for a crowd-pleasing scone recipe - this is it. Really great flavor and I get tons of compliments every time I bake them. My 6 year old even loves them!! Great suggestion for more flavor 06/28/2008 at 11:54pm User: cheryl from harr, PA User Rating: Here is a great suggestion that made them really over the top great...add a drained can of cut up mandarin oranges!! You will love it!! Many thanks to the others that changed the recipe with additional sugar, more zest & less butter (yes, I liked them MUCH sweeter) Without the additional sugar I could see how others thought they just tasted too plain like biscuits. Make those changes & you will get wows every single time you make these...and talk about easy! Definate Keeper! 06/17/2008 at 09:26pm User: Deana from Brownsburg, IN User Rating: Best scones I've ever had! I used half the salt, and substitued dried bing cherries for the cranberries. Outstanding! I plan to use this recipe over and over, as well as playing with it to make some other savory recipes too. Ina's recipes have never failed me. WOW! 05/29/2008 at 10:24pm User: Anonymous User Rating: These were amazing! I made half a batch and used half and half instead of heavy cream (becuase thats all I had). YUM! sticky dough 05/24/2008 at 08:06pm User: jaz from temple city, CA User Rating: these scones are absolutely a dream! buttery, flaky, just to die for. only problem, i've made this recipe three times, and each time the dough has always been too sticky. help please? I forgot the sugar!!! 05/22/2008 at 06:18pm User: Lilian from san diego, CA User Rating: I got so mad when I realised I had forgotten to put sugar in!! But what I did before rolling it out to form scones I put some sugar on dough, put extra on top before baking, and extra confectioners sugar on top. they came out delicious!!!!! I couldn't believe it!!! I kept the dough in fridge for about 4 days before doing scones. And baked only for 20 minutes. Yummy!! 05/20/2008 at 05:03pm User: Anonymous User Rating: These are delicious! They remind me of a mexican pastry called magdalenas, which are made with raising and coconut. Can't wait to try that variation next time. For the icing I'll add milk and coconut extract. Thanks Ina Fantastic 05/17/2008 at 11:53am User: Anonymous User Rating: I read the reviews before I made these and added more orange zest. They are fantastic. The orange glaze is awesome and makes this recipie. If you like scones, this is a great recipie. I have never made scones before. If I can do it, anyone can! Simply the BEST 05/15/2008 at 08:38am User: Jennifer from Bethlehem , GA User Rating: Ina Your recipes always come through!!! I made these for my son's 5th grade classes poetry reading and tea. They loved them I subed the cranberries for choc chips for kids but I would love cranberry. Once again a huge hit as usual "I love you!!" Jen organized mess 05/11/2008 at 12:30pm User: Gina from Andover, MA User Rating: i used a hand mixer, and the batter wouldn't turn into that dough i saw on tv! it was a bummer and i kept having to add flour to this gluey thing. so i skipped the eggwash and put lumps on a baking tray, and they actually came out really good! i would add more sugar though...and more icing! anyhow, i made these for my mom and grandma for mothers day, and ill definetly make them again. Best Scones Ever 04/19/2008 at 04:08pm User: Sarah from Louisville, KY User Rating: Very light and delicious. I have three of Ina's books and love all of her recipes. This recipe is one of the best. wow! 03/20/2008 at 04:09am User: Anonymous User Rating: Okay so it is now 1 in the morning and I am standing in my kitchen eating scones! I made these scones for a very early women's luncheon so I decided to bake them off tonight and promised myself I would have the willpower not to eat them since it was after midnight. Unfortunately, one look at these golden, buttery, flaky scones and I couldn't help it! The most moist and meltingly tender scones I've ever had! I definitely suggest upping the sugar to 1/3 cup but I have a sweet tooth. I also decreased the butter to 2.5 sticks and used the zest of 2.5 oranges. The flavor is amazing! I also added more cranberries which really helped. the recipe was really easy, easy enough to do at midnight! I cut them into tiny triangles (around half of a 2 inch square) and the baking time was about 12-15 minutes. Perfect! scones 03/15/2008 at 11:34pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Of all the scones that i make this is by far the favorite my family and friends love these! Heavenly! 03/07/2008 at 11:07am User: DONNA from anthem, AZ User Rating: My small mixer struggled with the heavy dough but it was well worth the extra effort. The scones were moist & light and soooo tasty. I baked them pinwheel fashion, not as individual circles, so the longer baking time was a necessity. Don't skimp on the orange zest in the batter or the orange juice in the glaze as that's the key flavor. Ina, you've given me another winning recipe. Thank you! orange cranberry scones 03/02/2008 at 06:52pm User: maria from claremont, NH User Rating: fabulous as is anything ina garten does--and perfectly easy to follow Awesome 02/17/2008 at 08:50pm User: Anonymous User Rating: These scones are really good. A little work is required to make them, but well worth it! Easy and delicious scones 02/15/2008 at 07:48pm User: Victoria from Howell, NJ User Rating: I was hesitant at first when watching this episode, but it seemed so easy for her, it shouldn't be that hard! I tried to do it, and I have to say that it was easier than expected. The dough was a bit sticky, but with a well floured surface and hands, it should be a problem. I was able to do different fun shapes with the dough and they came out perfect. My husband, who hates scones, actually ate it and loved it. I make it often for breakfast and still aren't sick of it yet! cranberry orange scone 02/13/2008 at 02:23pm User: marcia from warminster, PA User Rating: excellent, easy recipe to follow. They came out moist with a crispy otside. The flavoe was awesome - the glaze really brought the flavors together. Disappointing 02/10/2008 at 05:31pm User: Sam from Prescott, AZ User Rating: This recipe was very disappointing. The scones required a lot of work to make and had little flavor when they were finished. However, they looked appealing and smelled good and they have very good reviews so maybe I just messed up. I love these scones! 02/06/2008 at 01:41pm User: Mary Kay from Crystal Lake, IL User Rating: We are expecting a foot of snow today so I thought it a perfect day to try this recipe and I am delighted with the way they have turned out. They taste wonderful and their texture is perfect. They are a little bit of sunshine on a very snowy day! A review from Ireland 02/06/2008 at 08:09am User: Aidrienne from Malahide, MO User Rating: Lovely scone recipe ,omit orage zest and iceing and replace with sultanns or raisins and you have a great recipe for traditional irish scones.I have tried many of Inas recipe and I love them all.Greetings from Ireland Very good! 02/03/2008 at 03:52am User: Paula from Bursins, CA User Rating: I have made scones before, and I found these to be very good. I don't rave about them as other reviewers as I find that scones made with buttermilk turn out a bit lighter and with that bit of sour taste that makes them unique. The use of heavy cream in these makes them a bit heavier, but that is Ina's style - butter and cream and no compromises and that is why we love her! Go ahead and make them. Your time and effort will not be wasted at all and you will enjoy these rich scones. Great for a big crowd as the recipe is generous - as all of Ina's are! Huge hit! 02/02/2008 at 10:33pm User: Melissa from Wichita, KS User Rating: My husband's English grandmother, who grew up eating scones, absolutely RAVES about these scones every time I make them for her. In fact, she politely demands them! I never would have tried them if not for her, as I always found scones too dry and flavorless. These are hands-down the best scones I've ever eaten. They definitely made me the favorite in-law. I also find that reducing the salt helps. Kosher salt sometimes does not dissolve enough in this recipe for most people. Sea salt or plain or Morton's would work fine. Wonderful and Easy 02/02/2008 at 05:06pm User: Anonymous User Rating: These were so easy to make! My 3 year old even helped with the dough and they still turned out perfectly! Very buttery, but a little salty 02/01/2008 at 04:21pm User: Sara from Davis, CA User Rating: These scones were some of the most buttery breakfast pastries that I have ever tried or made, but I found them to be on the salty side. When I saw two teaspoons called for in the recipe, I thought that was a large amount, but I didn't want to dink around with the formula. If I make the recipe again, I'll cut back to one teaspoon. The glaze was nice, but not necessary. Decadent! 01/31/2008 at 09:16pm User: LISA from Pittsburgh, PA User Rating: These were wonderful -- I did follow the suggestions of other reviewers -- I used 1/3 cup sugar (I realize scones are not to be super-sweet, but the 1/3 seemed perfect) and the zest of two large oranges. I also wound up using the orange-flavored dried cranberries instead of the regular ones. My company raved about them and I had to send "doggie bags" home! I mixed and formed the scones the night before my brunch and baked them off the next morning. One mistake I made was to use different shaped cookie cutters -- stick to the basic round, triangle, or square...mine ended up looking kind of funny, but no one minded. So flaky, mmmmm 01/28/2008 at 04:52pm User: Washewon from Medford, OR User Rating: I made this recipe with out a fancy mixer as I just started cooking and I dont have one. I was worried how this would turn out, but ohhh they turned out soooo good, and I wish i had more variations on scones to add different fruits. YUMMY! soooo good! 01/25/2008 at 09:58pm User: Patti from Gilbertsville, PA User Rating: I just made these for my husband to take to work tomorrow morning. I made 1/2 with cranberries and 1/2 with blueberries -- the cranberries won! Of course, I just ate one of each to "test" which was better, and it's 11:00 at night! They look so nice on a crisp white napkin, and I packed fresh honey butter and apricot preserves to go with them. Mmmmmm.... scones 01/19/2008 at 10:43pm User: jerry from sigourney, IA User Rating: Light and tasty and easy to make. Good Scones 12/18/2007 at 03:59pm User: Nicki from Cambridge, MD User Rating: I really enjoyed these scones, but I think they could use a bit more sugar. Otherwise, very nice texture and perfect for a breakfast treat! Fantastic! 12/17/2007 at 02:09am User: Amanda from Riverside, CA User Rating: I made the dough for the scones for Christmas to freeze ahead of time, but I baked a couple off for me and my hubby to "taste test", and we were amazed at how good they are. So good, I'm making them again before Christmas comes for the other side of the family! The outsides are nice and crisp, and the insides are so light you can't believe it. The recipe was so easy, and it's so wonderful to have this recipe to add to my faves! Kudos to Ina who can make anyone feel proud of the food they make. WOW!!!! 12/06/2007 at 03:01pm User: Donna from Dublin, PA User Rating: Why did I ever wait so long to make this? I just got done making these delicious scones, and the aroma is still wafting in the air. Thank goodness for reviews. I did use 1/3 full cup of sugar (to give the dough a bit more sweetness, but not too much), only 1 teaspoon salt, all of the orange zest from 2 oranges, 5 large eggs (instead of 4 extra large). I split the dough into 2 rounds, then made wedges. And the nice, sweet orange glaze for the topping. 18 to 20 minutes baking time should do it in most ovens. For me, it was the perfect scone - it was fairly moist and just the right amount of sweetness. A great holiday gift, if they ever make it out the door!!! Absolutely Delicious! 12/02/2007 at 04:02pm User: Kirsten from Anaheim Hills,, CA User Rating: These scones are the best I've ever had. I've made them many times and I'm making them again this Saturday for a 50th Birthday Brunch. Thank You Ina! disappointed!! 11/29/2007 at 03:47pm User: katie from alpharetta, GA User Rating: These scones didn't taste much like scones, they tasted like biscuits. They lack sweetness and the taste of the baking powder was so strong, and eventhough I incresed the amount of the orange zest, they weren't that flavourful. Incredible! 11/27/2007 at 12:32pm User: Maria from Jupiter, FL User Rating: I am not much of a baker, but these scones are easy and fantastic. I have made these over and over again (sometimes substituting with dried blueberries)and they have never let me down. I usually put the butter in the freezer for a half hour before I start. They come out perfect. I used fresh cranberries 11/25/2007 at 01:47pm User: Stephanie from Washington, DC User Rating: I just made these this morning. They were fantastic. I halved the recipe and it made about 14 scones. I used fresh cranberries instead of dried and was very pleased with the results. Great - cut cook time! 11/24/2007 at 10:31pm User: Marla from Prior Lake, MN User Rating: The scones were fabulous! I totally agree with cutting the cook time. I cooked one set on an airbake and they were done in 17 minutes the non air bake pan burned slightly should have taken them out at 15 minutes. As always "We love Ina" My 7 year is her biggest fan - she loves to remind me to crack the eggs in a seperate bowl to avoid a bad egg!! Too cute Best scones ever! 11/18/2007 at 09:42pm User: PATTY from springfield, MO User Rating: I have tried several scone recipes & these are the best I have ever tried. They were easy to make & delicious too. They make a large batch. I baked some & froze the rest. I just baked the last of the frozen ones & they were still delicious. I love the gooey orange glaze on them. This recipe is a keeper! I even surprised my wife! 11/17/2007 at 11:37pm User: Robert from Murrieta, CA User Rating: I am a retired 62 year old man and married to a wonderful wife. I love scones and have never baked before. I found Ina's recipe on the Food Network and decided to make them. What a surprise when we tasted them and found that they were delicious! I gave some to my 85 year old neighbor and the next morning she demanded the recipe. I surprised my wife and surprised myself! We enjoy them in the morning with our coffee. These are just the greatest ever! 10/12/2007 at 01:27pm User: LINDA from BrownsMills, NJ User Rating: This is a wonderful receipe! I subed my dried blueberries and they are sooo good also. Thanks Ina So light, so delicious! 09/16/2007 at 01:08am User: Janelle from San Francisco, CA User Rating: First time ever making scones for me. We used blueberries for our fruit of choice. And it worked out wonderfully. The scones were light and moist. Everyone who had them really liked them. A little Less BUTTER!!! 09/01/2007 at 08:15pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Our guests enjoyed the flavor of the scones, but they didn't shape the way I expected. I recommend useing less butter on my next batch! Perfect for Sunday brunch with tea & coffee!!! I expected this recipe to be more of the traditional dry, dense scone. But This recipe was more like a buttery buscuit. Definitely Not Dry 08/30/2007 at 10:08am User: Danielle from Stockton, CA User Rating: I used to stay away from scones because whenever you see them in the stores they always look so dry. Making them yourself is quick and easy and definitely not dry! These are a hit!! Easy, Quick, and Delicious :) 08/21/2007 at 01:52am User: Anonymous User Rating: When I didn't have enough time to make dinner rolls that goes well with Chicken salad for potluck dinner, I decided to make this (without glaze). It was great hit for everyone! Both of my toddlers ate pretty good, too. So easy, so quick and so tasty!!! Some people commented it as 5 star hotel level BF scone! I will make them soon again!! What I like about Ina 07/22/2007 at 11:34am User: kathryn from Maggie Valley, NC User Rating: She's elegant without being snotty--her recipes are the same. I never thought I could bake scones, but watching her did the trick. I altered the recipe and made my own lemon ones with lemon zest and sugar on the side while I was doing the dough, then I sprinkled the zested lemon-sugar on top and baked Gawd! They were good---her advice about the butter was right on.... Her show relaxes me--I do love watching most of the other food network people, but when I watch her, I feel relaxed and calm--because that is how she is. My friend loved them! 07/18/2007 at 01:07pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I made these for a friend and she loved them. I used the entire grated orange peel but would only use half the salt next time. I mixed these by hand and instead of rolling and cutting, I used a large ice cream scoop to put them on the baking sheet. Sprinkled with a little sugar, and they were beautiful! light and delicious 07/17/2007 at 04:18pm User: Kate from Gilbert, AZ User Rating: I loved these scones, I made half the amount and got 8 nice sized wedge style scones. I simply rolled the dough into a circle and cut into 8 wedges (using the whole amount as stated in the recipe then I would split the dough into 2 first and then roll and cut to make 16 wedge style scones). I cooked them for exactly 18 minutes and they were perfect. Totally light and delicious, and have a wonderful hint of orange. Wonderful with cofee and better than ones you can buy at starbucks! Can't get enough of these scones! 07/14/2007 at 01:33am User: TIFFANY from SAN DIEGO, CA User Rating: I could not believe how yummy these scones turned out! They are not the typical dry scones. I baked one fresh batch and froze the rest of the dough, and skipped the orange glaze part for the topping. It was delicious just with the sugar on top!! I also added 1/2 tsp more of the orange zest. I'm making this again tomorrow. Can't get enough! delicious 07/01/2007 at 04:19pm User: Anonymous User Rating: easy yet looks like it took a lot more work - I leave off the icing - it isn't necessary as the scones are delicious without the extra calories. These were GREAT! 06/26/2007 at 07:06pm User: Tracey from Cape Coral, FL User Rating: I saw this episode and they looked great. I made them the next day. I followed the recipe, but having read the reviews, I made a few changes. I used only 2 sticks of butter instead of 3 (mostly b/c I only had two, didn't seem to affect them at all) and I used the zest of the entire orange instead of just the 1 tablespoon, maybe was an extra tablespoon of zest. The recipe was really easy to follow and they came out great. Very good and would make these again. Excellent! 06/24/2007 at 01:43pm User: Carol from Coral Springs, FL User Rating: These scones were so easy to make and so very delicious! Ina does it again! Yummy 06/21/2007 at 11:31pm User: Patricia from Collegeville, PA User Rating: These are the best scones ever amd I've made and purchased many, many different scones. Could use a little more orange flavor -- more zest possibly. Otherwise --- so flakey and tender -- they just melt in your mouth. Outstanding 06/17/2007 at 02:22pm User: Donna from Lockport, IL User Rating: Moist and absolutely delicious. I only made half the recipe and wish I had made the full batch. There were none left. The family came back for seconds. Thanks Ina for a real winner. Moist and Delicious 06/11/2007 at 05:28pm User: Emily from Ann Arbor, MI User Rating: Easy and delicious... but I needed to shorten the cooking time to about 15 minutes! Absolutely Delicious 05/26/2007 at 08:40pm User: ann from Long Beach, CA User Rating: Made these for Sunday brunch. Everyone loved them. Froze leftovers and they were as good as the first time reheated in microwave. Nice scones, however 05/16/2007 at 12:12am User: Kristina from San Francisco, CA User Rating: I think there is too much butter in the recipe. They came out well, except for that. Next time I make them I will use 2 cubes instead of 3, and also add more orange zest and cranberries. Mmmm with a cup of tea 05/02/2007 at 11:33pm User: Mary Alice from Moore, OK User Rating: I was surprised at how easy this recipe was. I had always wanted to try scones and now I feel comfortable making them. I cut these into traditional triangles and used fresh lemon juice instead of orange juice. My friends were delighted! More like a biscuit than a scone 04/23/2007 at 03:59pm User: Traci from Houston, TX User Rating: I like the traditional English scones, which are generally drier. This recipe uses way too much butter and it's not as sweet or orangy as I would like. delicious! 04/15/2007 at 01:56pm User: Lee from Newburg, MD User Rating: Everyone who's had these at my house loves them. I've made them in different shapes...round sometimes and triangular other times. With and without the frosting...also, used basic dough recipe with raisins and cinnamon chips instead of cranberries and citrus. Excellent recipe; quick and easy to do in the morning. These Scones Are Incredible! 04/11/2007 at 07:07pm User: Tracey from Chicago, IL User Rating: I made these scones for breakfast for the first time a couple of weeks ago and they turned out great! I preped all my ingredients before mixing. I also left them in the oven a few minutes longer because I like my scones more golden brown on the top and bottom. The orange zest adds a great twist to this recipe. Karen from Sacramento 04/05/2007 at 01:12am User: Anonymous User Rating: I love scones but had never tried making them. These were great! Will definitely make again. Halving the recipe still makes a good-size batch. Amazing!! 03/29/2007 at 09:25pm User: Anonymous User Rating: These scones are outstanding!! I added extra orange zest and mixed in extra cranberries when I was kneading the dough! Great recipe!!! Flaky! 03/21/2007 at 01:46pm User: Vicki from Allen, TX User Rating: These were very flaky, tasty and easy to make. I'm sure the massive qty. of butter contributed to the flakiness, but I felt a little guilty eating them. I think next time I will bake them for a little less time because they were a tad bit dry. I brought them to a women's function, and they were gone before I knew it. Scrumptious 03/20/2007 at 04:23pm User: Dara from Bogalusa, LA User Rating: These were wonderful. I froze them after I baked them and I take a few out at a time as needed and reheat in the oven for about 10 minutes. They are still very flaky and fresh tasting. Although, the next batch will have more of the icing! just perfect 03/20/2007 at 09:02am User: Anonymous User Rating: this is the perfect scone recipe. It's perfect for a sunday morning breakfest or a brunch. It's sweet but not too sweet and I love the orange. STOP LOOKING, YOU HAVE IT! 03/17/2007 at 10:35am User: joelle from vineland, NJ User Rating: THESE SCONES ARE DELICIOUS! FULL OF FLAVOR, MOIST AND BEAUTIFUL. NOT DRY OR HARD AND THEY ARE EASY TO MAKE! Best Ever 03/05/2007 at 12:05pm User: Susan from Kingman, AZ User Rating: These scones are the very best ever! Light, flakey, & so easy even an amateur can make them. Just for fun I substituted dried mixed berries for the dried cranberries & they were fabulous. Thanks Ina! Scones Please 03/04/2007 at 07:57pm User: Anonymous User Rating: My first attempt at scones and they were delicious! Recipe was easy and rewards were high...what could be better! Excellent scones! 03/03/2007 at 01:39pm User: Amy from Loma Linda, CA User Rating: My friend first made these scones - and they were delicious! We couldn't stop eating them!. They turned out light and fluffy - I LOVE this recipe! It's not for those watching their calories, but hey, we all need to splurge once in a while! Okay 03/01/2007 at 10:56pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I thought these scones could have been a little sweeter. They had a good crumbly scone consistency, but they could have used a little more sweetness amd a little more orange flavor. The only orange flavor I got was in the glaze. If i were to make them again I would add some orange juice to the batter and several more tablespoons of sugar. Absolutely delicious scones! 02/23/2007 at 10:31pm User: Theresa from Davenport, IA User Rating: Made these ahead of time and froze them because we were having overnight guests in the coming weeks. They thawed beautifully and were still light, fluffy, and moist. I did not glaze them, but instead served them with honey butter. My guests loved them. My young children also like them. We make these often because they are quick and easy and make lots. I always have very good luck with Ina's recipes Easy and Great! 02/23/2007 at 04:56pm User: Katie from Clay Center, KS User Rating: I made this scone recipe one afternoon and it was a hit! Since my husband doesn't like cranberries, I added chopped frozen black berries to a bunch for him. This was a great recipe and I will use it again! Wonderful.... 02/23/2007 at 11:17am User: BARBARA from novato, CA User Rating: My first time at making scones and I thought it would be hard. This recipe is very easy to make. The scones are wonderful...great orange flavor and light. I didn't want to dig out my round cutter so I just cut them into squares. My husband would eat the whole batch if I let him!! This is definitely a scone recipe to keep. Wonderful Scones 01/31/2007 at 06:58pm User: Krista from Florissant, MO User Rating: These were absolutely the best scones great flavor and easy to make. I made these for my mother-in-law when they came down to stay. Ina is her favorite from food network. They have now become a family favorite and I have made them a couple of times since then. Very Good! 01/24/2007 at 05:45pm User: Anonymous User Rating: ...Got many compliments from family and friends, light and buttery, tasty and beautiful scones Orange scones 01/22/2007 at 11:05am User: Anonymous User Rating: A little heavy Absolutely Fantastic 01/19/2007 at 03:38pm User: Dinah from Miami, FL User Rating: These melt in your mouth! I made these for a women's gathering this morning and everyone raved about them. I live in Central America and can not find heavy cream so I used a whipping cream and added a little milk to it and they turned out beautifully. Everyone was asking for the recipe. perfect 01/18/2007 at 07:38pm User: Anonymous User Rating: great easy recipe. Use this as a basic for all flavors of scones The good things in life are easy!!! 01/17/2007 at 01:26pm User: JOhn from Fayetteville, GA User Rating: I rarely bake from scratch (I prefer the grill) but one morning I was n the mood for something different and found this recipe on foodtv.com. WOW! These scones taste as good or better than the bakery bought varieties (I suppose anything with this much butter in it has to be good) I've had AND they are very easy to make. One word of caution though... My dough was a little "wet" at first and the sprinkling of flower didn't seem to help much. I had to call my wife for advise. She said just keep on sprinkling flower on the dough until it tightens up. That's what I did and they turned out great! Perfect for guests 01/13/2007 at 12:40pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I made these over Christmas to have for my overnight guests. They were gone before they were even cooled completely. This is an excellent recipe and well worth the trouble to roll the dough, cut the scones, etc. Just like hotel scones 01/07/2007 at 05:30pm User: PATTY from New Lenox, IL User Rating: I just made these scones and they were delicious and tasted as good as the scones my daughter and I recently had at an expensive Chicago hotel (actually even better). The only thing I did differently was instead of rolling and cutting the scones into circles, I just put the slightly kneaded dough into a no-stick scone pan I bought at Bed, Bath & Beyond (similar to a cupcake pan but has 16 small individual wedge). So much easier and looked so cute. Served like the hotel did, with a side of fresh whipped cream and a little strawberry jam. Definitely will stay in my permanent recipe book! Great recipe with a few tweeks. 01/07/2007 at 11:39am User: MELISSA from Des Moines, IA User Rating: The first time I made these I thought they were good but the orange didn't come through the way I thought it should. The second time I cut the salt in half, added about one tablespoon more sugar, and tripled the amount of orange zest. They were exactly what I was looking for. Also, these freeze wonderfully in a Ziploc bag between layers of waxed paper. Just take them out and pop them in the oven on Sunday morning and enjoy with a nice cup of coffee or tea! Yummiest I've ever tasted 01/01/2007 at 05:39pm User: Penelope from Westlake Village, CA User Rating: A friend dropped a package of these off on my doorstep last night as a New Years' gift. I love scones, but homemade ones are usually either too sweet or too dry. These were fabulous! We ate them all up by the next morning. When I saw her, I asked for the recipe and she directed me to the Food Network website. Can't wait to make my own batch! Outstanding 12/30/2006 at 04:16pm User: Marie from Marlow, OK User Rating: I made these for my family for Christmas morning. They were absolutely delicious! Also, they reheat in the microwave so well. Will make them again and again!!! Marie from Marlow DEEEEEELICIOUSSSSS!!! 12/30/2006 at 01:29am User: STACY from Woodland, CA User Rating: I've made this recipe twice now - with RAVE reviews both times! For those of you who'd like to cut back a little on the fat: I accidentally used 3/4 CUP (1 1/2 sticks) of butter the first time instead of the 3/4 POUND (3 sticks) called for and they were still delicious! The second time I added a little more sugar to the batter and used 2 sticks of butter (still one less than called for in the recipe). One guy told me that these were the best scones he'd EVER had - bar none! I also made the batter two days ahead and refrigerated them with no ill effects to the taste/quality. Excellent recipe - definitely a keeper! Unbelievable! 12/29/2006 at 08:58pm User: Michelle from Elk Grove, CA User Rating: Ina Garten has done it again! This is the best scone I have ever had. Easy to make and definitely a keeper! The Best! 12/27/2006 at 10:34am User: Carolyn from Starkville, MS User Rating: I've made cranberry scones many time, but this is the best recipe yet! I made these on Christmas eve and used fresh cranberries. They rise beautifully and taste delicious! The recipe is easy and makes plenty of scones to share with friends/neighbors. I'm sure I will continue to use this recipe and substitute other fruits. Thank you, Ina! You're the best! Great For Christmas Brunch 12/26/2006 at 07:05pm User: Sharon from littleton, CO User Rating: Easier than I thought. Used processor to zap the dough and added cranberries during the knead step. Didn't frost-pressed coarse natural raw sugar on top instead, increased the orange zest in the dough cut in triangles. To avoid the bottom burning mentioned in other reviews used an airbake cookie sheet.Agree with the shorter cooking time, too. Made 1/2 recipe without problems. WOW 12/26/2006 at 02:33pm User: Anonymous User Rating: If you this right, this is the best scone recipe there is! It makes me actually WANT to eat breakfast! scones 12/25/2006 at 01:58pm User: Anonymous User Rating: these are so yummy, i found them easy to make mouth watering!!! 12/23/2006 at 11:55pm User: KATHY from couer d'alene, ID User Rating: Wow, these are the best scones I've ever made. Plus very easy! You must try. DELICIOUS !! 12/23/2006 at 01:52pm User: Anonymous User Rating: So easy and so good!! I couldn't believe how good these were! I was worried that they would be hard and dry but they were very moist and the flavor was wonderful. I took them to work and everyone raved about them. Thanks Ina!! Good and Easy 12/20/2006 at 10:08am User: Tom from Overland Park, KS User Rating: 5 stars for sure. I'm glad that I had the advantage of reading some of the previous rater's comments, but none the less these scones are great. They came out buttery and flaky, but I wouldn't call them moist. I did add extra zest and cranberries into the dough and added some zest to the glaze also. The taste is sensational. Regardless this recipe has become a breakfast staple around our house. ANNE 12/20/2006 at 09:30am User: Anne from Millsboro, DE User Rating: They were delicious, and not hard at all to do. A little too much salt for my taste. A Great First Scone Recipe 12/18/2006 at 06:08pm User: Sara from Novato, CA User Rating: I've made these 3 times now and love them! Very simple and a delicious result. I suggest removing them from the oven after no more than 20 min... as the bottoms burn quickly after that. Would love to find a slightly more evenly sweet flavored scone though. Good, but need more Orange flavor 12/04/2006 at 11:54am User: jenn from concord, NC User Rating: I made these for breakfast and they present beautifully, but the orange flavor wasn't there for me. I will make them again though, because my husband & daughter LOVED them. I may grate more orange zest into the dough and see if that will help. The scone itself has a very delicate taste, but I need a stronger cranberry orange flavor! Like a professional baked them! 12/03/2006 at 11:37am User: Deborah from Atascadero, CA User Rating: I was so pleased with this recipe! The texture of the finished scone was buttery and flaky. I'm going to make these on Christmas morning. The only thing that could make this scone any better is a little extra orange zest and additional cranberries! This recipe will be a new holiday tradition. Ina is the best! Merry Chtristmas. great scones! 11/25/2006 at 01:17pm User: Anonymous User Rating: these were easy - we made one batch for an english project at school, they were so good, we fixed another for home Delicious scones 11/22/2006 at 09:35am User: Anonymous User Rating: I never thought I would get this to come out as good as Ina's looked but the recipe really was simple and the end result was so yummy! The extra dough freezes beautifully too so you don't have to make the whole batch at once! perfect for company 11/18/2006 at 02:02pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Delicious and very easy. My houseguests and I were impressed; however, the recipe makes a ton! Great Recipe 11/05/2006 at 04:24pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Fantastic flavor and texture. Delicious!! 10/29/2006 at 07:32pm User: Sarah from Boston, MA User Rating: I absolutely loved this recipe! One little suggestion add a tiny bit more sugar on top for maximum flavor... I absolutely loved this recipe definately DELICIOUS!!! Will most certainly will make these again, no one could keep their hands off of them. Very Good.. 10/28/2006 at 06:07pm User: denise from Chatham, NJ User Rating: I brought these for a weekend with friends as a hostess gift-everyone loved them-be sure to serve with jam.. Easy to Make, Delicious to taste 10/23/2006 at 01:37pm User: Marjorie from Cambria, CA User Rating: These scones got rave reviews from the guests at my B&B. Great taste, good texture and not too dry or too sweet. Now have a new scone recipe 10/19/2006 at 10:07am User: joan from overland park, KS User Rating: Thought my current scone recipe was the best but after trying Ina's I now have an even better one. I also reduced baking time and sprayed scones with a little water and sprinkled sugar on top, reduces "crusty tops". Adding 1TBL of zest adds great flavor to the glaze. Regarding too much kosher salt, all brands are not the same, something to do with crystal structure-I used 1 tsp of Morton's. Devine! 10/17/2006 at 03:13pm User: DIANNE from Greensboro, NC User Rating: Just the way nature intended! If you can taste both flavors individually - you have a GREAT recipe!! They are light, fluffy and oh so addictive!! Not the heavy sinkers I've had in the past. I substituted 2% milk for the cream - maybe that had something to do with it . . . but still super good! Delicious & Easy 10/12/2006 at 07:53pm User: ELAYNE from Sacramento, CA User Rating: I was a little worried about trying scones. They always seemd troo daunting. I was suprised at how easy these were. They were delicious, light, and fluffy. I will definitely be making these again & again. Delicious! 10/09/2006 at 12:07pm User: DONNA from Sacramento, CA User Rating: These were delicious! Per previous raters' suggestions, I mixed additional orange zest into the glaze and cut the baking time to 15 minutes. To shape the scones I just used my dough scraper to cut 16 rectangular pieces. Light, flaky, and delicious! 10/08/2006 at 05:31pm User: Adrienne from Fayetteville, NC User Rating: I watched these being made on tv and I had to rush and get the recipe to make these. They were very flaky and light. I will be making these again and again. Thanks! so easy and so good 10/08/2006 at 08:13am User: Courtney from providence, RI User Rating: I was amazed at how easy this recipe was and I definitely did not expect to finish baking them as quickly as I did. They turned out perfectly too - just like the ones from my favorite bakery. I was worried that I over mixed and over handled the dough, but they still turned out light and flaky. I don't have a standing mixer and so used a handheld mixer. The mixer didn't work very well, but it got the job done. I also added an extra tsp of orange extract to the cream/egg mixture and to the icing mixture. I would recommend everyone make these for guests. I also like the idea of giving them as gifts. Does anyone know what their shelf-life is? perfect. 10/07/2006 at 01:11pm User: Julie from New York, NY User Rating: this is an incredibly rich scone recipe -- butter, cream, AND eggs, after all -- but they came out perfectly and got rave reviews. i was out of confectioner's sugar so i skipped the glaze, but i don't think they needed the glaze anyway -- the sugar sprinkled on top was the perfect amount of sweetness. i also skipped the egg wash because i don't like the hard shiny finish. i will absolutely make these again -- they were perfectly tender and flaky inside. Delicious 10/06/2006 at 08:50pm User: Julie from LaPlace, LA User Rating: I make this for my Husband is a snack and oh Boy,He loved it now He wants me to put one for everyday lunch. Awesome!! 10/06/2006 at 02:50pm User: Sandra from Pleasant Hill, IA User Rating: I used self-rising flour instead of regular flour and added 1 tsp of orange flavoring to the egg and cream mixture. It made them so much more fluffier and added great flavor!! This recipe is a keeper!! Wonderful Recipe 10/02/2006 at 07:47pm User: Arlene from Philadelphia, PA User Rating: I have not made scones in a few years and found this recipe very easy. I made sure that I did not handle the dough too much. These came out light and flakey and delicious. I think next time I might experiment with dried blueberries and put a lemon glace on top. Thank you for sharing this. Heavenly 09/22/2006 at 04:09pm User: DIANE from Miami Beach, FL User Rating: I decided to make these the other day because I had all the ingredients on hand. They were a little messy but rather easy to put together. I decided to increase the grated zest in the batter and omit the glaze. The house smelled wonderful and I couldn't resist having one straight from the oven. They literaly melted in my mouth. I will make these again and again. They also make a perfect hostess gift, just add a small jar of preserves. Office Hit 09/22/2006 at 05:21am User: s from Rochester, MI User Rating: The recipe is not only easy, but has the potential of being versatile. You can change out the cranberries and orange zest easily for other flavors. These scones disappeared quickly when I took then to the office! Great Scones!!! 09/21/2006 at 09:07am User: bill from princeton, NJ User Rating: These scones are really great and fairly easy to make...definitely worth trying as are all of Ina's recipes. I haven't been disappointed by her yet! A tip I received on baking911.com is that you can parbake the scones till they are risen but not yet browned...cool, freeze and then bake again, when needed, from frozen. Apprently it is better for the leaveners to do this rather than to freeze the dough and then fully bake. Enjoy! too much salt 09/16/2006 at 06:47pm User: Alison from Fairbanks, AK User Rating: these were tender and moist, but much too salty. No one in my family would eat them and the dried cranberries cost almost $5 per bag. bummer. I even used kosher salt as the recipe recommended. ABSOLUTELY THE BEST 09/15/2006 at 03:11pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Ina... Once again you have created a real breakfast crowd pleaser. Easy to make, buttery and flakey. I added extra cranraisins to dough and orange peel to icing. Neighbors fought over them !! YUMMM .. The best scones ever!!! 09/13/2006 at 05:07pm User: Audra from Wadley, AL User Rating: This was the easiest scone recipe! It was simple, and delicious. Ina said the dough froze well, so I tried it and the frozen/freshly baked scones were as good as the day we first tried the recipe. That is handy for a busy mom who is short on time, and also when you only have 1 person that wants one ...No Problem!! I love the craisins and orange combo as well. Thanks for a wonderful recipe that takes a " special weekend" food and make it an anytime treat!! Wonderful Scones! 09/08/2006 at 12:08pm User: Anonymous User Rating: These are fantastic and easy to prepare. I did add some Orange zest to the glaze to intensify the orange flavor a bit more..Yummy:) Thank you Ina Great quick Classy Breakfast 09/07/2006 at 08:43pm User: vince from san jose, CA User Rating: These were quick and sure beat the *** out of store bought strudle for breakfast. Thanks Ina AWESOME!!! 09/03/2006 at 02:18pm User: Debbi from Vail, IA User Rating: I hate scones because they are always tough, DRY and HARD. These are awesome. I had to take these someplace and everybody raved about the flavor and how moist they were. Ina keep it up!...by the way your espresso ice cream from this same show is to die for. Debbi, Iowa Easy and Tasty 09/02/2006 at 05:28pm User: Rachel from Rantoul, IL User Rating: This receipe comes together quite easily, as long as you have a mixer. I substituted regular salted butter for the unsalted and just cut back the salt a bit. It worked out well. Incidently, do make sure to glaze these at the end. The glaze takes no time to make and really finishes the flavor. It adds the perfect amount of sweetness. Without the glaze, these would be too plain. Delicious! 09/02/2006 at 11:37am User: natalie from Charlotte, NC User Rating: I loved these! I'm not a big fan of scones I've had at bakeries -- they are always too dry, but these were delicious and not at all crumbly or dry! They were easy and turned out exactly like the picture. I froze 1/2 the recipe. Does anyone know if I have to thaw them before I bake them? Best Scones Ever 08/30/2006 at 09:40am User: Anonymous User Rating: The best scones I have ever had Awesome Awesome 08/29/2006 at 01:35pm User: Janet from Oakhurst, CA User Rating: Yesterday I watched your show and Barefoot Contessa sure did make my mouth water with her Cranberry Orange Scones. I made them this morning, they are awesome and easy to make. I wish I had a picture to show you as they turned out just like Contessa's. The taste and texture is AWESOME.. I will be making this recipe over and over. It is a 5 Plus Recipe... scones are a delight 08/28/2006 at 06:02pm User: Dick from Oxford, PA User Rating: Got the recipe Saturday and right after church on Sunday made the scones. Oh they were so good. Ina is such a reliable cook.I hope she is still with the network. All of her shows lately seem to be repeats. Seldom have I cooked one of her recipies that I haven't been pleased with the results. The Countessa can cook! YUM 08/26/2006 at 04:37pm User: susan from st james, NY User Rating: These looked so good I had to make them the same day I saw the show. My husband and I loved them and I will definately be making them again. Watch cooking time... I kept a close eye on them and just took them out when brown and firm...much less then 20 min. maybe mine were smaller than on the show. |
