Really good!

I was a little hesitant with the whole orange juice/orange zest idea, but it was actually the best ingredient(s). Yay! Loved it.

Adults loved - Kids not so much

This was really good. I used pie crust instead of puff pastry. I thought the flavor was good but the children were luke warm to this recipe. The orange jucie was a different twist on apple pie/turnover and they did not really care for it.

Better than the frozen kind!

I turned them into individual Cran-Apple turnovers!

Great recipe! I had to change it up a bit the second time I made them and the results were even better! I used dried cranberries (about 3/4 of a bag) instead of cherries and I doubled the recipe using 3 Granny Smith and 3 Golden Delicious apples. I rolled the puff pastry to about 14" then cut it into 16 squares (if they weren't perfect squares I just gave them a little stretch to even them out.) Then I put a few pieces of the apple mixture in each making sure a few cranberries were in it. I poked holes with a fork to vent and finished them off just like the recipe calls for- EVERYONE raved over them. Double recipe makes 64 tarts!!!

I made 1/2 the recipe
09/29/2007 at 04:59pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
There are only 2 of us so I made 1/2 the recipe, 2 GS apples and only 1 sheet of the puff pastry. Also I used Splenda instead of sugar in the turnover, but sugar on the top. I plumped the cherries with a tablespoon of store bought OJ in the microwave then chopped them as was suggested by another reviewer. I had trouble stuffing 1/3 cup of the mix into the pastry. My husband said it was my best. Most turnovers are too sweet and this was a perfect balance.

Too much expectation

I gave this recipe a 3 star rating for its overall quality. The breakdown is as follows: 5 for ease of prepartion if store-bought pastry is used 1 for taste--mine turned out very bland I liked the idea but not the flavor of the filling.

Wow!

I had a bit of difficulty with the pastry dough, but other than that I tweaked the recipe a bit by leaving out the cherries and I added a bit of brandy to the sauce before baking. The apple turnovers were awesome. The crust was flaky, the filling out of this world, and the apples were perfectly cooked in my very hot oven. Thanks Ina.

I've made this recipe twice now, once w/out the cherries. Yes, the apples do get tender in 20 minutes. This dessert is both delicious and looks beautiful. I do push the apples around on the pastry square so they will get into the corners when I fold it over. So to be on the safe side, add an extra apple so you'll have the amount of filling you want. I've served with ice cream, whipped cream and a sour cherry sauce on top. My family and guests were very pleased.

Can someone let me know if the apples actually cook until tender. I want to try this recipe, but don't know how those chunks of apple can cook in 20 minutes.

These are FANTASTIC

My 12 yr old daughter dislikes apples anything, so she said until I made her Ina's apple turnovers. We absolutely loved them!!! Naturally, I made them with my own apple recipe inside, not exactly like Ina's, but it was fun making an old time favorite. I love Ina's recipes and ideas, she reminds us of the old time classics with a Barefoot twist.

Really good turnovers

I made these after I watched the show and I have to say they took a little longer than I expected but well worth the effort. My husband is an apple pie lover and he loved them so I will be making them again. They are better served warm though. Thanks again Ina!

Ina, I LOVE your recipes. This is another hit! Thanks to the availability of frozen puff pastry, this dish is pretty easy to make. It was also VERY well received by my dinner guests! I agree with some of the other reviewers, who suggested using more filling for each turnover, in order to make them look fuller and puffier. I used about 2/3 cup of filling rather than 1/3 cup. I also experimented with one alternative: I tried using dried cranberries (rather than cherries) which I soaked for a while in Grand Marnier. My turnovers were delicious both ways! Thanks again, Ina!

Fill er up!
08/20/2006 at 05:45pm
User: KATHY from dallas, TX    User Rating:
I made a double batch of the filling and bought 2 boxes of the pastry sheets so that I could make 12 for my coworkers on Friday, and then 4 for my husband and me for the weekend. They were delicious, and everyone enjoyed them, however, the first 12 I made with just the 1/3 cup of filling seemed a little empty. You could take 4 or 5 bites before you found anything inside. So for the last batch of 4 I made for us, I used 2/3 cup filling in each one, (I had plenty - my 6 apples must have been very large). These turnovers were very full - they looked like Ina's wonderful apple pie where the filling is mounded up - but I managed to seal the edges of the pastry . They were fabulous! I served them with whipped cream and they were decadent and delicious. Ina has fast become my favorite chef!

I will try these

I love using puff pastry! Although I usually do not have the time (or energy) to make it, having access to wonderful recipes using the frozen pastry just makes my day. When I saw this show I was almost giddy to try it! It was easy and oh so good! This network has made cooking fun again for me. My husband and daughter are delighted. As a busy Mom and RN, I need recipes that are easy yet different and good. No more frozen dinners for us!

I decided to make this at the last minute this evening and it was a great hit! I didn't have an orange, so I used the squeeze of half a lemon and no zest. I used a few dried cranberries in each tart instead of dried cherries. I increased the nutmeg to 1/4 tsp from 1/8. 20 Min in my oven was a tad too long...I'll reduce it next time I make them, just keep an eye on them.

Loved Them!

Fisrt I would like to say that rating this dish a medium in difficulty is a mistake. It was sooo easy and what a hit. I served it for company and boy were they impressed. If only they knew how easy it was to make!! The only advice I have is to put the pastry dough first on the baking dish and then fill it. I found it hard to pick up after it had been filled. Do not worry if it doesn't seal real well as the puff pastry will automatically seal when cooking. Once you make these, they will become part of your regular dessert options.

Loved this!!

I took this dessert to my friend's dinner party, they all loved it. Yes the apples cook in 20 min, but they're not mushy at all, they come out perfect. Serve with vanilla ice cream...you got a winner!

What an easy and winter wonderful recipe! I made these for an event I was going to and then couldn't go, so I froze them sealed using a food saver. I have been defrosting them two or three at a time and serving as suprise deserts for the family and friends. I will make another big batch when I run out. Thanks once again!

We made these for cooking club tonight. Everybody seems to agree, a little more sugar and cinnamin. Some say lemon instead of orange. I say leave out the cherries, if need another fruit, raspberries. And yes, the apples did cook in 20 minutes. Over all great idea. Who would bake an apple pie, when you can have individuals in 20 minutes.

Easy to make, and I eat it for breakfast, or as a dessert. I sliced the apples thinly, and they get totally cooked. Awesome recipe as expected from the great Ina:)
