I made this cake yesterday! It is awesome! My husband and children are very pleased! There was not a lot of streusel but this was okay with me. Fewer calories!! I omitted the walnuts. The glaze is very tasty. Be sure to use real maple syrup. Thanks Ina! Love you and your recipes.

My mom's recipe is much better!!!

User: Linda from Toronto, Ontario M5N 1L3 canada, CA    User Rating:
This recipe came out perfect. Does need more streusal. Used the Anniversary Nordicware Bundt Pan. Looked gorgeous. Glaze needs to be changed. Needs more flavour. Perhaps maple extract? Do not waste money buying maple syrup for this. I happened to have it already. Also, you need to double the glaze recipe. 50 or 55 minutes if fine for this. Watch carefully. Will probably taste better after a day or 2. Still doesn't compare to my mother's recipe. I thought I would make Ina's first, since I have 4 of her cookbooks now and have made several of her recipes. In fact, I made her French Toast, Parmesan Chicken (delicious) and her coffee cake just yesterday. Linda

Yummy! I made the recipe with 1 1/2 times the ingredients and baked it in a 15/9 inch pan. I put half the struesal in the middle of the batter and half on top. ( I doubled the streusal). Brought to work and it was gobbled up! "tastes like the pastry shop" they said. Thanks Ina.

Add apples!!
06/28/2008 at 08:38pm
User: Carri from Somerville, MA    User Rating:
This was the first thing I made with my new stand mixer and I was not disappointed! I followed the recipe exactly except I doubled the struesel as recommended, and added 2 chopped granny smith apples - YUM!! I also skipped the glaze and it was fine without it. I'm afraid I'm not sure how much I would like it without the apples as the cake itself is not very sweet so I would recommend at least doubling the struesel if you're not into fruit in coffee cake. I'm sure there's 100 different ways to alter the recipe, though! Next time I might try chocolate chips instead...

Very good & easy coffee cake

User: MuscleMan from Chicago, IL    User Rating:
This coffee cake is very easy to make and tastes great. Is even better a day or two later. I did not use walnuts, used brown sugar and only 1 tsp. of cinnamon (don't like a strong cinnamon taste). Next time I'll increase the amount of streusel as others have suggested and use walnuts. NOTE: If you prefer the flat, gooey coffee cakes found in a typical grocery store in the USA, this recipe will not be sweet enough for you. This cake reminds me of the coffee cakes from European-style bakeries here in Chicago, which I prefer - must less sweet.

One of the best!

User: Colleen from Tinton Falls, NJ    User Rating:
I made this coffee cake for my mom for Mother's Day last weekend, and it was one of the best cakes I've ever made... and I make A LOT of cakes. Everyone raved about it and wanted the recipe. The only things I changed were the glaze and did not add the nuts. I made the maple glaze and it just tasted like confectioners sugar, no maple flavor, so I didn't put it on the cake. Instead I made a glaze from 3/4 c. confectioner sugar, 1 Tbs milk, and 1 Tbs fresh lemon juice, and this was much better. Definitely keeping this recipe in short rotation next time I'm making a cake of this type!

Amazing coffee cake

User: Katie from Olympia, WA    User Rating:
This is an excellent recipe. I followed previous suggestions and doubled the streusel, used pecans instead of walnuts, and the second time I skipped the icing because you can't even taste it. (the amount of icing used in the photo is at least 3x what the recipe makes!) Cake flour is a must - it changes the texture completely! It is best served warm or the same day as baking - the second day it is sort of greasy.

the best ever

User: Christine from springfield, VA    User Rating:
I baked the cake yesterday and shared some with my sister. She declared this cake is her most favorite. We do bake a lot in our family. The cake is so delicious. I did double the streusel as other reviewers suggested but I should not have. There was too much streasel on the top of the cake that it did not stick to the batter and therefore, it fell off the cake when I cut it. Next time, I will follow the recipe as is. Thank you Ina for such a wonderful coffee cake.

A Super Coffee Cake

User: Pam from Arlington, MA    User Rating:
This is the best sour cream coffee cake I have ever baked. Cake flour makes it very light and tender. The maple syrup in the glaze adds a delicious twist. The only thing I would change is to double the streusel since I think the amount used in the recipe is a little on the light side.

User: beth from new milford, CT    User Rating:
Delicious! Great to have with your morning coffee. We love to warm it up in the microwave. Perfect! I like to have my glaze thicker than the recipe calls for, so I don't put as much syrup in with the powdered sugar. I also double the streusel because I like a lot in the middle. Thanks for that tip. I did underbake it, though. I suggest you watch it carefully for your first time. My husband brought the rest to work, and it was a big hit. I've had to make copies of the recipe for his co-workers. They were still asking him about it the next day. Give it a try!!

Good, but needs a few changes
01/23/2008 at 10:44pm
User: Rachel from Columbia, MO    User Rating:
We thought it was moist and tasty, but definitely needs to have the streusel doubled. We also thought that the streusel was a little dry and could use more butter. And, it's imperative to generously douse the cake in the glaze, because it isn't very sweet otherwise. With these changes, it is excellent. By the way, I used light sour cream and it worked just fine.

Excellent recipe!

I thought it would be fun to bring breakfast to my friends on the last day of school, and although they were still full from having breakfast at home, they ate a few pieces. I was worried about having to carry it around all day, but I had finished the rest of it myself before lunch! haha. I made it again for my family this summer and it sat out all day and everyone walked by it and took a piece. Everyone was mad at me for ruining their diets. :) this is delicious and well worth the time it takes. the cake flour can be substituted for flour with 1 extra tsp. baking powder. Also, this cake has no lemon in it, like a reveiwer suggested previously. :)

Ina, you've really done it. I made this recipe for Christmas breakfast after years of consistent failure on every coffee cake but the box mixes and this was great. The recipe was fast and easy to whip up and the result was fabulous. I did make a few adjustments. I like making Amish friendship bread and on that recipe you not only grease the pan but then you coat with brown sugar instead of flour and it creates a nice crust on the whole thing but still comes out nicely! Also all I had was all purpose flour and it worked fine. In the streusel I put a pinch of nutmeg and in the glaze all I had was the cheap, butter flavored imitation pancake syrup and it worked out GREAT! What a recipe. I had passed it around to all my friends that very same day!

Fantastic!! But need to double the streusel!

I used a bundt pan I'd never used before instead of a tube pan, and the cake looks so beautiful! I doubled the streusel topping and put it on the top, middle, and bottom of the cake. Love the maple glaze, and the whole cake tastes and looks so professionally made. I used low-fat sour cream, and a mix of walnuts and pecans, since I didn't have enough walnuts. Moist and delicious! Would make a lovely gift to bring to someone's house for the holidays. Put it on a beautiful plate, wrap in cellophane, and top with a bow.

This was the best coffee cake I have ever made. It was dense and moist and very tasty. I did double the streusel and I thought it was just the right amount of sweetness. I served it Thanksgiving morning to 2 people who had never had coffee cake before and had already decided they didn't like it. After one bite, they were hooked!

Wow! This was perfection and so easy to make, too. I used a bundt pan and then served the bundt cake "upside down" with the streusel on top. With the topping and glaze, you couldn't even tell. Also, it's just the right amount of sweetness for the morning. If you're running late or worry about messy transport, it's not a problem to skip the glaze. It's still tasty and delicious.

When the batter is so good you could practically eat it raw, it's gonna be GOOD.

This is bakery quality but you get to keep all the bragging rights. I made mine in loaf pans (two loaves)and turned them out to cool then drizzle with icing. Keep one and give the other to someone you want to impress! This recipe alone has added the tube pan Ina used to my list of wedding registry completion items as I plan on making this cake again and again. I found the cake to be moist (even with Breakstone's fat free sour cream) and sweet. When the batter tastes so good you could eat it from bowl instead of cooking it, you know you have a good thing on your hands! I did double the crumb filling & icing; I recommend that (if you want something a little sweeter). Lovely recipe Ina. Many thanks.

While not the best coffee cake I've had, it was very good. The cake was moist and baked up beautifully, and the maple glaze was a nice touch. I found it a little lacking in flavor, though, and think that if I made it again I would add more cinnamon and maybe double the amount of crumb topping.

I really enjoyed making this coffee cake, Here are my recommendations if anyone cares: 1) Double the streusel topping recipe, and instead of placing it on top, try placing it on the bottom of the pan, so when you turn it over, the streusel topping will be on top and not as dry/crumbly. 2) Increase the recipe for the glaze by a half (try 3/4 cup confectioners sugar and 3 tablespoons of maple syrup..maybe 4). 3) I also added about a cup of raisins to the batter ... that really made it special! I wonder how rum-soaked raisins would taste in there? MMMM! 4) I decreased the cooking time to 45 minutes ... came out just perfect! THANKS INA!

Had left over buttermilk so decided to sub it for the sour cream. Didn't have cake flour so used all-purpose (minus 2 T per c). Doubled the topping/filling, which I thought was too salty, though others didn't. Also used a bundt pan instead. Turned out fine with all the adjustments. A real simple cake to make.

I love to cook, but I'm not much of a baker. However, I've received many compliments with my first cake and now I make it for all gatherings.

I tried this recipe without any alteration and it simply was not as good as I thought it would be, not sweet enough for me I guess, it is a fairly simple recipe to make, just not to my liking, I also had a hard tome getting it out of the angel food pan, sorry Ina, I love your other recipes, keep up the great work!

Moist cake but I like more streusel topping

the cake itself was very moist and bake up very well but I personally would double the streusel topping. We all love the cinnamon and brown sugar topping and I don't think there was enough in this recipe.

This recipe is the freshest tasting lemon cake I have ever had. As a tradition I keep one in my freezer just in case unexpected company arrives. That is a real challenge because I always want a piece for myself quite often. I have to hide it in the back of my freezer just to keep from having to make it too often.

One of the Best...

This recipe is great. Similar to the one my Mom make. All ovens are different and I would suggest everyone get an oven thermomater. The cake took about 55 minutes in my oven, and turned out perfect. The cake is not that sweet and that is why I do like the cake. Also the reviewer that wrote in about their coffee cake turned out upside down. You probably used a "bundt" type cake pan. The recipe calls for a 10-inch tube pan. It's the one that comes in two pieces and everyone called it an angel food pan, back in the day. :) I have tried it both ways and it does come out great either way. If you like moist, dense, not so sweet, but sweet enough coffee cake, then you'll love this.

I love this coffee cake but ...

User: Denise from Mulvane, KS    User Rating:
the first time I made this I followed the recipe word for word and ended up with streusel on the bottom of my cake plate when I turned the cake out. The next time I prepared it I sprinkled the streusel topping in my pan first, then a layer of batter, more streusel and then added the remaining batter. Once I turned it out (over) onto my cake plate I had the streusel on top. I added the glaze and OH HAPPY DAY! It looked just like the photo.

I made this for a Sunday brunch, it was fabulous! I love coffee cake, but this is my new favorite. If I have learned one thing from Ina ~ the best ingredients do make a difference! If you haven't used the Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract you NEED to! What a difference good vanilla makes! Thanks Ina ~I haven't met a recipe of yours I didn't like!

This was an easy coffee cake, and one you can make with ingredients on hand. My cake was done in 50 minutes. People that are having trouble with the cake being dry, should start testing the cake 10 minutes before it's scheduled to be done. My husband couldn't talk until he finished his huge piece with ice cream. We wanted a snack and I thought of this at 10:00 PM Ina, this is a keeper - thank you.

"THE" Coffee Cake recipe -- A Keeper

I have made this at least 10 times over the last couple of years and it is the perfect coffee cake - i always get compliments on this - those who are complaining it is dry probably over-cooked. Cake flour does not make cake dry. I have never had that problem. better to under-cook and use extra streusel in the center.

hard to swallow

I followed the recipe to the letter, even running to the store to get Kosher salt when I realized I didn't have any. The cake smelled wonderful and looked great but, it was so dry we could hardly swallow it. I watch the Food Network every day and Ina Garten is one of my favorites and I use a lot of her recipes but, I was concerned about the dryness of the cake.

THIS HAD GREAT FLAVOR----RICH & DELICIOUS. HOWEVER, I'M SURE THE CAKE FLOUR IS WHAT MADE IT VERY LIGHT & A BIT DRY, & THEREFORE I WOULDN'T MAKE THIS RECIPE AGAIN. WE PREFER A MORE MOIST AND DENSE TYPE OF COFFEE CAKE.

This recipe is perfect, almost exactly like a sour cream coffee cake recipe I have been making for years. It is rich delicious and perfect. I never did the glaze until now, wonderful. Try it, you will love it. A suggestion, if you use non fat sour cream or margerine it will definitely not be as good, so don't bother making it. I have tried it and will never do it again.
