All in the Plums!
06/29/2008 at 12:10am
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
My crust came out awesome, the crumble top was wonderful but my plums were dry and flavaorless. I guess she really means RIPE plums for this thing to work. The plums I used didn't develop any "bubbling" whatsoever, so I tried to help it along by poking the plums to help generate the juices, added some granulated sugar to the topping to help sweeten it up and drizzled the whole thing with brandy, covered it with aluminum foil (so the now browned topping won't burn), back in the oven and 10 minutes later I finally had a bubbling sauce of sorts. Not the best, but a good save with stinky plums I had to work with. I think I'll try this recipe again maybe in August when plums are very much in season and riper. I'm interested to try everyone else's suggestions with other fruit. Good luck everyone!

I used pecans and walnuts for this and was able to get the plums. What a great combination of the tart plums with the crust. I served it with unsweetened whipped cream and it was incredible. Great with coffee the next morning!

DON'T USE PLUMS!

User: JACQUELINE from Buffalo, NY    User Rating:
I SOMETIMES WONDER IF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY MAKE THESE RECIPES ACTUALLY DO. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT 2 REVIEWERS: MONTSERRAT & GISELA DID. THE PLUMS WERE WAY TOO TART. EVERYONE SAYS YUMMY, YET THEY ADD ICE CREAM, USE DIFFERENT FRUIT, SUGAR, ETC. I WILL KEEP THIS RECIPE FOR THE DELICIOUS & EASY CRUST & CRUMBLE TOP.....WHAT COULD BE WRONG WITH 1-1/2 STICKS OF BUTTER. HOWEVER, I WILL PUT PEACHES, APPLES, OR SOME OTHER FRUIT IN IT NEXT TIME......PLUMS HAVE VERY LITTLE FLAVOR TO BEGIN WITH. IN THE END, I TOO HAD TO SPRINKLE THE TART WITH 10X SUGAR, OR IT WAS INEDIBLE! I ALSO FOUND THAT USING A PASTRY CUTTER WORKED BETTER THAN A MIXER, THE BAKING TIME WAS TOO LONG, & THE AMOUNT OF CRUMBS ON THE BOTTOM SHOULD BE INCREASED. FROM NOW ON I GUESS I SHOULD ONLY READ REVIEWS BY THE ABOVE NAMED LADIES!

Fabulous, but made too much

I used a 9-inch tart pan instead of a 9 1/2-inch pan and still followed the recipe exactly. I ended up with twice as much of the crumble as I needed, plus several extra plum slices. The juices seeping throughout made this a keeper!

This is quite possibly the easiest and best tasting tart I have ever made. When I can't get plums, I use pears, nectarines or apples. In any case it is so delicious. As usual, my compliments to Ina Garten, who I believe is the best at whatever she does..simple elegant!

User: montserrat from St. Francis, WI    User Rating:
This was defenitly very very easy but i don't think that the amount of sugar is correct, is not sweet at all and in the end It Is a dessert so it should be work without the ice cream that everybody is adding, another thing like more people wrote, the amount of mixture to put in the beginig is incorrect you should put 2 cups and the rest at the end, and also the baking time is too long, 35 minutes worked for me, in the end it was fun to make but i was very dissapointing in the lack of sweet!

Delicious!

I made this tart on several occasions with plums, pears, raspberries, and tomorrow I'll venture into chocolate! It always works so I'm going to push the envelope! I imagine it will taste like a decadent cany bar. We'll serve it with rich vanilla ice cream and start our diet in 2008!

I found plums on sale yesterday and wanted a dessert recipe. This plum tart is so easy and unbelievably delicious. I love brown sugar and walnuts (butter never hurts either). I had some frozen raspberries and put them around the plums. This is perfect warm with vanilla ice cream. It would also be perfect for brunch. As always, Ina is the best. Thanks for a great dessert, it's on my list of favorites.

Too many plums?
08/18/2007 at 09:18am
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
The recipe called for 2 lb of plums but I found I only needed 1. I did everything according to directions and it looked, tasted, and came together beautifully. I just have a pound of prune plums leftover. Anyone else have this problem? Also to the commenter who said they thought it needed something-- add a pinch of salt to the dough. I'm not sure why it was omitted but a pinch of salt goes a long way to making pastry dough taste really nice.

Wrong baking time!
08/16/2007 at 01:40am
User: Elizabeth from Kirkland, WA    User Rating:
Tried to make this. I followed the instructions meticulously - and after only 20 minutes in the oven, the tart was already burned so the edges were black. However, some tartlets that I had made out of the same dough and removed sooner were not burned and quite tasty. Please fix this, Food Network!

typo in recipe for amount to put on bottom
07/02/2007 at 06:29pm
User: GISELA from keller, TX    User Rating:
This is my first tart. I had problems with this recipe... I had a hard time getting the dry ingredients to form a crumble. Not sure why? Also, there must be a typo with the amount that should be used for the bottom crust. I think it ought to say 2-1/2 cups on bottom and the remainder 1-1/2 cups goes on top. That makes much more sense. And my plums turned out much to "tart". I will sprinkle a little sugar on them next time.

I loved this recipe! It was very easy and took no time at all to cook. It's not only simple but versatile. Since plums weren't in season, I used apples, raisins, cranberries, and a little bit of cinnamon to give an autumn taste to the filling. It worked equally as well and I can't wait to try the plums in it when they are in season.

Although it isn't sweet at all if no ice cream or whipped cream isn't added to serve, the process is so easy and quick. I realized that the butter should be kept in freezer, otherwise the dough will be sticky.

The tart crust was one of the best tasting crusts with the walnuts and the butter amount was just perfect so that it did not have the sharp taste some crusts do when using too much butter. The light brown sugar make the crust moist pliable. It was perfection. In fact I will use this as a base crust for a number of other tarts I bake.

The crust recipe is easy to follow, and I found that adding a little cinnamon-sugar prior to baking really added some extra flavor to the plums. You are one of my favorites! Now I have to get busy and make my husband's favorites for his birthday today; German Chocolate Cake. The longest part of that is making the Coconut-Pecan Frosting.

Wow! So easy and delicious every time. This is my third time making your Plum Tart and it couldn't be better. Just the right sweetness, texture, and flavor. However I do find the 1 1/2 cups of dough not quit enough for a 9 1/2 inch tart pan. So I ajusted it to 2 cups. Which leaves the perfect amont of crumble for the topping. Thank you again Ina for all your great receipe's. Carlo Geraci
