I love this show. I made these donuts the other day and my family loved it. I made them again, but instead of the sugar and chocolate, I made an Amaretto glaze, and a Rum glaze. It made the donuts so moist and tasty. I just melted butter and sugar together for 5mins, then I put it in 2 bowls. In one i added the amaretto and the other I added the Rum. I also used the mascaporne frosting and they were awesome. Another thing i tried was making them with out the donut holes and i made a simple custard from jello pudding to fill the donuts. They were awesome. If you want to the recipe give me a shout.

As expected, a recipe that comes out of Giada's kitchen is absolutely delicious. I have tried lots of her recipes & haven't been disappointed yet & my husband has fallen in love with another cook. lol My recipe file is getting full with lots of her recipes, but if he loves them then I'll cook them. She has made me a better cook even at my age of 6l. Thank you Giada, I'm always willing to learn new recipes from a great cook.

WOW!! How simple and absoulutely DELICIOUS these were!! I have always made my own pizza dough (my family loves this!) and this is what I did this morning and what a huge hit these donuts were at our Sunday breakfast! Who needs Dunkin Donuts with this recipe!! :) I saved half of the pizza dough to try Giada's "Pizzettes with Gorgonzola, Tomatoes & Basil" for dinner later on tonight. Thanks, Giada!

I think it's easier to just roll the dough into "holes," a la Dunkin Donuts Munchkins. So good! I made a glaze from confectioner's sugar, a bit of milk and a bit of almond extract. Yum!

Kid Easy, Fun and Yummy!

User: Cindy from Crown Point, IN    User Rating:
This recipe is so simple, delicious and fun! It's quick as the dough I buy only takes 5 minutes to rise and it's economical at only 39 cents a box. It is terrific for kids! Every time my daughter has a sleepover or my nephews spend the night we make doughnuts and the kids love it!! We have tried variations such as adding a little cocoa powder to the mix for chocolate donuts. I've also added some vanilla and/or almond extract for extra flavor. We melt chocolate chips for dipping and then sprinkle with crushed nuts, cake sprinkles and/or cookie sugars, too. It is a huge hit with the kids and adults both!

WOW!!! WAY TASTIER THAN THE DONUT SHOP
08/04/2005 at 11:27pm
User: MELISSA from Bakersfield, CA    User Rating:
I made these donuts from a package of pillsbury pizza dough. I used an avent baby bottle cap to cut my donuts and the back end of a cake decorating tip to make my little donut hole. It worked out pretty good. These cooked extremely fast. They are great served immediately after being sugared. I did not make the chocolate dipping sauce since the cinnamon and sugar sounded best for my taste. The dinut holes tossed in confectioner's sugar were also great. Martha Stewart made the little holes splrinkles with powdered sugar a few years ago on her show and they were way more complex than this recipe and never made her version. Store-bought pizza dough was just better suited for me. Highly recommended.

These are delicious and easy. I used a pizza dough mix that I only had to add water to. I'm sure that each time I make these it will be easier and they will be yummier. My kitchen was a mess after I was finished, but it was my first time ever cooking with grease. Next time will be much smoother and cleaner.

Oh my. These are so good. I used packaged dry mix for the dough. I could not be bothered with rolling the dough, so I stretched it with my fingers and made a fried dough shape. Well, it was better than anything I have ever gotten at a carnival. We could not get enough. This is a recipe that I am going to return to often because it lends itself to so many variations. Thanks, Giada!

User: Rachael from Annapolis, MD    User Rating:
I made these for my husband! It was trial and error at first because my thermometer broke so I just had to throw a few pieces of dough in before I got the oil just right. I did the cinnamon and sugar for my doughnut holes and the chocolate glaze for the regular. It's not something I would do on a normal basis but a great recipe to hang on to.

Disappointed
05/28/2007 at 04:55pm
User: Sylvia from Folsom, CA    User Rating:
My girls and I tried this recipe, with disappointing results. I adore glazed raised doughnuts, but making the dough from scratch is just a little much for me. I loved the simplicity of the pizza dough idea, but the doughnuts turned out extremely heavy and dense. I did use a frying thermometer, so I know that oil temperature wasn't a factor. They did not puff up nearly as much as Giada's did, and since the dough had very little sweetness of its own, they still tasted salty, even with the sugar, chocolate ganache, or glaze. It is possible that the fresh dough I bought at the grocery store just wasn't quite right. I think I will try again with a different pizza dough, or maybe even Bridgeford bread dough - it might make them lighter in texture. I still love Giada, and appreciate her efforts to bring wonderful Italian-American inspired foods to American tables.

I had used refrigerator biscuits to make dougnuts with before but not the pizza dough. These were excellent, but the pizza dough was so elastic that it is a little more difficult to work with than the refirgerator bisuicts, but I did like the way they cooked up. Much lighter than I expected. We used all three toppings, the cinnamon sugar, the powdered sugar and the chocolate topping. All were wonderful! Will definitely make again.

I was going to give this a 3-star, but then decided because of the toppings, to give it 4-stars. To be honest, I was looking forward to making them from scratch: flour sugar, egg, butter, etc like mia nonna taught me (but misplaced the recipe). It surprised me that she used pizza dough! But, I'll keep an open mind, & try it @ least once! :) I got to get back & try translating a recipe for Italian doughnuts in nonna's cookbooks she gave me.

I never knew you could make doughnuts out of pizza dough! That was a lot of fun and easy. Be careful not to make your dough rounds too thick or it will NOT come out light and airy as its supposed to. You must eat them right away as leaving them sitting for a few hours makes them harden up and not tasty.

This was a very good to have the kids do because they could decrote the top of them however they would like. Like sprinkles and maybe some hot cholate or some whit chocolate. It is also very easy to make because all you need is some pizza dough and you can get that at the store or you can go to your favorite pizza shop and ask them for some pizza and if you are lucky they will give it to you but the would mean that you would have to pay for it. So enjoy it and be creative.

Excellent! I imagine the quality of the doughnuts depends upon the quality of the pizza dough you buy. We bought the cheap Pillsbury type, and with that, it was still excellent. So I can only imagine how great they would be with a better dough.

I was going to use Pillsbury Italian breadstick dough (shame on me!), but was out. I was REALLY CRAVING the doughnuts... so I used the Grands can that I had. I just cut a circle out in the middle (they're already round, skip the rolling & cutting work!), and fried them in the deep fryer. They turned out great!!!! I will have to try it with pizza dough next... I was skeptical when I saw it, but they're fun and easy... way better than trekking over to the donut shop in pjs and bed head!

I like a lot of Giadas recipes and am always cooking. But when I made these, I found the pizza dough to be too elastic. I had trouble rolling it out, it kept stretching back. They were o.k. when they were still warm, but don't dare try to save them. After they are cool, too hard to bite (my kids even said so, they had trouble biting them) I also made the chocolate glaze thats with the recipe, which never set. What a mess.
