Excellent recipe. This has become our signature dish at the holidays and everyone loves it. I suggest reducing the amount of white wine as it tends to overpower the dish.

Looked great, but...

I found it to be too overwhelmingly cheesy and pungent. I even went vegetarian with it and just did the cheese sauce because it sounded fantastc. Oh well, you live, cook and learn...

variation on a classic

This was a delicious variation on one of my favorite recipes. The only thing I would change is the giant shell pasta. I would go for something smaller; maybe bowtie or corkscrew. But it was really good.

Disappointing

User: RUSS from Staunton, VA    User Rating:
As good as this recipe looked on TV and as interesting as it sounds, I found it rather disappointing and a total waste of good shrimp. What I liked was the addition of bacon (I've never found tasso ham anywhere, no matter how many recipes I find that call for it) and spinach, and I used penne, which I prefer, instead of the large shells. Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese 101 is the best. This one doesn't come close, and, as I mentioned, is a waste of shrimp.

Thank you!!. I've always loved macaroni and cheese, but I've never had it this way and am very sorry I had to wait sooo long. My better half has never loved it, but tolerated it for my sake and the chance to "just" eat. Well, he thought it was great, and will just love to have it agin, any old time. I was unable to find Tasso ham, but I really think it may have over-powered the other flavors, so I will stick with a "good" bacon, I used Boars Head. What a "comfort" food.

I LOVED this!!! I made it pretty much as written, except substitued the shells w/gemelli pasta. It was delicious. I made it for a cooking group and we all couldn't get enough! I would even fondly classify a couple of the members as "food snobs," and they were greatly impressed! We all started out w/modest portions initially, then we all ended up eating it right out of the casserole dish!!! I highly recommend. True comfort food!!!

This recipe is very good--rich and creamy. So far I have made it twice and it's easier to make the second time around. It is a little messy to make, though. BUT, I like the large shells and the shrimp.

User: Melissa from Mesa, AZ    User Rating:
Tried this recipe tonight after craving something like this for weeks. Used bacon instead of ham and rotini instead of shells. There are a lot of ingredients, but don't let that scare you. The work is definately worth it. So delicious. My husband said that this was restaurant quality. I will definitely make this again.

This dish was great. I varied the recipe based on what I had in the house and on my preferences. I used medium sized shells, smoked gouda instead of fontina, omitted the ham and shrimp altogether, used 1% milk instead of cream, and added drained diced tomatoes. I was a bit nervous about all of the modifications, but it was still delicous! Definitely a keeper recipe.

I tried this recipe right away. We love it, served it as it's own meal. I will add more shrimp next time and cut them in halve to have shrimp in every bite. I baked mine instead of using the broil, (my dish is not broiler safe) turned out great. My husband wants me to put the favorite stamp on this one.

I am a college student and I found this extremely easy and absolutely wonderful. I was amazed at the subtle flavors playing off of each other. I served a variation of it (no meat or veggies but with extra cheese)at a dinner and everyone loved it. Three people asked for the recipe. It is also good with other kinds of cheeses. A great recipe to add to your collection.

User: LISA from Bangor, ME    User Rating:
This dish is very rich and indeed very good. I had no problem at all with the taste. But, be warned making this dish is a lot of work and messy and it's expensive. This would be nice to bring to a party or holiday dinner, but because it can cost over $20 to make, it's not a practical meal for every day. The only substitution I made was using light cream.

I changed the recipe a bit to make low fat. I substituted 1% milk for the cream, mozzarella for the fotina, and Sargento reduced fat mexican blend for the cheddar. Other than that, I stuck to the recipe. It was fantastic. My kids loved it. The shrimp really makes this dish. This mac & cheese is bound to be a regular at our house from now on.

This was a decent dish, but not worth the time & money involved in preparing it. I probably will not make again. Perhaps, I'll toy around with the recipe because I loved the idea of spinich & shrimp in a mac & cheese dish.

User: Lisa from Corpus Christi, TX    User Rating:
I've made this recipe twice so far, and both times people were amazed at how good it was. The first time the fontina was a little too strong so the second time i added a little less. I made it on Super Bowl Sunday for a very hard to impress guy, and needless to say EVERYONE loved it. No one wants to believe it's mac and cheese...they all think it should be named something super fancy. Great Recipe!

This is a great dish to do for about 5 or 6 people. The shrimp adds the perfect spark to this dish. Might want to go lighter on the bread crumbs because it dries it out if you use a lot. Also, double the amount of cheese for a thicker and richer sauce. Great dish!!

I did some "tweaking", however! I don't like shrimp, so I cut that out. Couldn't find Tasso ham (has ANYONE?), but the thought of regular bacon in a mac/cheese dish didn't sit well w/me so I went with pancetta..YUMMY! Oh, and one final tweak- The italian parsley on top was just too weird. The broiler dried it out, so it had a weird texture. I'd leave it out. Otherwise YUMMY!!
