NEARLY Perfect 07/14/2008 at 11:22am User: John from Los Angeles, CA User Rating: It was wonderful to hear the praise from Brunch guests, but thank goodness I made a decision to cut back on the Praline topping. I followed the cassarole and praline topping recipe exactly, but thought using all of the topping would be excessive, and cut it back to about a tablespoon per slice. This left a huge bowl of topping which I hope will freeze. I definately will make this again--and again--and again! messey mush 07/04/2008 at 02:27pm User: Jeanie from Greenville, NC User Rating: didn't bake or puff up as I expected. Could be my oven, but followed directions explcitly and was disappointed with texture, not with taste. very good 06/30/2008 at 09:42pm User: Tad from crestview, FL User Rating: I made this over the weekend for some of my family and this was a very big hit. It's definitely not like traditional french toast, tasted like a mix between french toast, a cinnamon bun and a pecan pie. Be aware that the consistency is a bit softer than regular french toast. Wonderful Recipe! 06/28/2008 at 03:20pm User: DONNA from spicewood, TX User Rating: This recipe is delicious! However, it was necessary to cook it longer than 40 minutes. Just Perfect! 06/26/2008 at 08:02pm User: karli from kansas city, MO User Rating: Absolutely amazing! Just use fresh spices for the best tasting dish. We found it sweet enough to be without the syrup. Also, bread pudding tastes very similar to this also so you could try making a vanilla custard/pudding to pair with this dish! Its so yummy! Unbelievable 06/20/2008 at 06:37pm User: Karen from Lakeland, FL User Rating: This is the most delicious baked french toast I have ever had. My husband said that even when it was cold it was like a sweet bread pudding. Don't hesitate to try this one!! it was a hit 06/14/2008 at 07:42am User: Lisa from Addison, PA User Rating: I made this for our father/son brunch at church. It was quick, easy and delicious. Many people asked for the recipe! Special Occasion Treat 06/12/2008 at 08:31am User: Ida from Cambridge, VT User Rating: I've made this several times, and while it's decadent, it's absolutely delicious. I held a large Sunday brunch, and made a triple batch, and it turned out beautifully. This is a dish meant to impress for special occasions. Way too soggy! 06/11/2008 at 12:15pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This is one I won't be trying again. I was hoping it'd be something different but it turned out too soggy. Oh well. Devilishly Delicious 06/10/2008 at 05:49pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I have made this several times for my family on Christmas Morning. It is so good. Thank you Ms. Deen Paula is out of control 06/03/2008 at 07:56pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I feel a heart attack coming on just reading this recipe. I realize that there are a lot of changes that can be made to make this recipe healthier but this is a terrible starting place. A lot of people don't think to make these changes and would actually feed their families this artery-clogging mess. Truly decadent! 05/16/2008 at 04:27pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Great to make for a group brunch. I only use half the butter and it still is incredibly rich and delicious. Enjoy! Different Variation 05/15/2008 at 07:40pm User: Lisa from Delta Junction, AK User Rating: This is an excellent starting recipe. I already had this one but mine has you adding a jigger or two of Gran Marnier to the 1/2 and 1/2 mixture for the overnight soak. It omits the baking, instead butter a hot skillet and fry like regular french toast then top w/syrup or whipped cream and strawberries. Can't fix this a wrong way. Let your taste buds guide you. Very Good 05/13/2008 at 02:42pm User: Lori from Kent, WA User Rating: I thought this was very good. My kids thought it was 2 thumbs up. I too, think that 1 stick of butter and 5 eggs would be plenty and maybe even halve the topping, plenty sweet. Would make it again. Outrageous French Toast 05/12/2008 at 06:37pm User: Lori from Studio City, CA User Rating: This is one of the best recipes I have ever made. We had it for Mother's day - and everyone wanted eggs benedict so we had both and there was not one little crumb left. We will make this again, very soon. Yummy! Yummy! 05/12/2008 at 02:56pm User: Grace from Fairfax, VA User Rating: This was a hit at our Brunch. Everyone loved it and it was all gone within an hour. One important tip - serve when warm and not right out of the oven! It's a little soggy when it comes out, but if you let it sit for about 30min, it's much tastier and the texture is a lot better. YOU MUST MAKE THIS!!! It's great. YUMMMYYYYY 05/12/2008 at 12:25pm User: Lori from Penacook, NH User Rating: That was great!!!! I made it for a mother's day brunch I hosted and it was love by all....I followed the recipe exactly and it came out perfect, not soggy at all. Absolutely Delicious! 05/12/2008 at 08:28am User: Deborah from Covington, KY User Rating: This recipe was so easy and soooooo delicious! I made this for Mother's Day brunch and served it with sliced strawberries-oh my God! Later that evening, I warmed another slice and put the strawberries and a scoop of butter pecan ice cream on top-reminded me of a sinfully delicious bread pudding! I have share the recipe with several ladies at my office and will definitely make it again! Mother's Day 05/11/2008 at 10:18pm User: Suzanne from Farmingdale, NY User Rating: I made the Baked French Toast Casserole with Maple Syrup for Mother's Day brunch and it was absolutely delicious!!! Easy to make and was a big hit!! I will definately make this again and again. Thanks Paula Deen! Not as good as I had hoped 05/11/2008 at 09:40pm User: K from Belleville, MI User Rating: I made this for my Mom for Mother's Day. I followed the recipe to a "T", except perhaps putting a couple more pieces of bread in the pan. It was soggy and not nicely browned at all after 45 minutes of cooking. My relatives weren't impressed with the presentation, although it tasted okay. I will not make this again. Terribly disappointed. Back to the drawing board. (p.s. The alternative recipe for raspberry syrup on the Paula Deen website is very good, if you want to try something different with it). Will try again 05/11/2008 at 12:25pm User: lupe from calumet city, IL User Rating: Just made for Mother's day and house did smell yummy, the kids didnt like it as well as my husband and I.Didn't really care for the topping, I did reduce the eggs in the recipe and next time I will make it without the topping. Was alittle soggy but still good. Baked French Toast with Maple Syrup 05/10/2008 at 01:10pm User: Mary from Wells, ME User Rating: This is our favorite recipe for special occasions. It is the choice of all our Moms for Mother's Day Brunch. Easy to fix and so delicious. Always a hit! 05/09/2008 at 01:43pm User: Bridgett from Lolo, MT User Rating: I have made this recipe a few time and it always gets rave reviews. I make one slight modification, which is eliminating the maple syrup. Instead I cover the casserole with fresh raspberries and sliced peaches while it is still warm from the oven. Just needs tweaking 05/06/2008 at 10:00am User: Susan from Jonesboro, AR User Rating: After reading the reviews I added 2 extra egg yolks and cut out the one cup of milk so it would not be soggy; before baking I pushed down all of the bread so it would be covered and it came out great! (when Emril makes quiche, he adds extra egg yolks, thus the hint about that; his is the best quiche I have ever made!) too mushy 04/26/2008 at 05:59pm User: Barbara from Brooklyn, MD User Rating: I liked the way this recipe tasted, but I didn't like the texture at all: too mushy or soggy - kind of marshmallowy. Ech! I'd have to look at the recipe again, but might try experimenting with different amount of egg/milk, etc. Amazing 04/26/2008 at 01:41pm User: Mary from Fitchburg, WI User Rating: I made this for Christmas Brunch last Christmas, I forgot to write a review, however, it turned out amazing! Loved this and my children loved it too! I was a little hesitant with my children but they really loved it. The taste was so wonderful. It was a very special brunch for Christmas and we all loved it. Awesome...if you like BREAD PUDDING! 04/26/2008 at 12:43pm User: Isabel from Woodstock , MD User Rating: Ummm...where to begin? Well, based largely on the positive reviews, I decided to take this recipe for a spin. I followed the instructions down to the letter and openly raved about the dish in advance to my family and everyone was excited and anticipating the "french toast" dish. Well, when it came time to dig in, a funny thing happened. It didn't seem like french toast at all...in fact, it was amazingly similar to bread pudding. You know, the kind you have at your corner buffet restaurant? Almost identical...the only thing missing was the raisins. So...to bottom line on this review: Good stuff...tastes great if you like bread pudding. French Toast? Not so much. Loved it! 04/24/2008 at 02:32pm User: Heather from Fairbanks, AK User Rating: Brought this to the monthly girls brunch and everyone just loved it! It was moist and sweet but not too sweet, didn't even realy need the syrup and most took it without. Was very tasty and yummy. I cooked it a little longer than the recipe stated about 15 minutes and it came out perfect! WOW! 04/14/2008 at 07:23pm User: Dyann from Lakeland, TN User Rating: What hostess doesn't like to have folks rave about their meals!, but especially have several guest comment on their favorite item - both women and men. I served for our Easter celebration and had more requsts for this than any of the 20 choices provided. This may become a definite family favorite for Christmas,Easter,Thanksgiving, etc. You will not be disappointed!!!! Baked french toast casserole 04/13/2008 at 09:12am User: cindy from knoxville, TN User Rating: It was way to soggy for our taste!!!!! very good 04/12/2008 at 11:59am User: Michele from Staten Island, NY User Rating: another great recipe from Paula, easy to make and taste great. Used regular syrup and taste great. Didn't put nuts, kids (under 10) have allergies and they loved it this dish... now an Easter tradition 04/08/2008 at 07:22pm User: JESSICA from Fullerton, CA User Rating: I had to make something easy this year since I was hosting an Easter brunch at my home after worship service. So Paula Dean to the rescue with this great recipie that you make the night before and just pop it in the oven. It was very yummy and there was nothing left in the dish. My suggestion is to make the topping the night before with room tempeture butter. Put it in the fridge with the casserole and then pull it out an hour or two before you cook your casserole. It was easier to make that way and easier to spread too. Delicious! Turns out similar to bread pudding 04/06/2008 at 04:20pm User: Yvonne from Finksburg, MD User Rating: If you follow Paula's recipe the dish does turn out more like bread pudding than firm crisp french toast. We love bread pudding in my family so it was a huge hit for Easter brunch. I added two sliced apples to the top of the bread before sprinkling the praline topping. I thought the apples were a nice addition. I've made this for the office and they loved it too. It is simply divine as is - without syrup. De-licious 04/01/2008 at 03:11pm User: Ruth from Broomall, PA User Rating: You really don't need all the syrup, but this delicious and couldn't have been easier to make. Will make again - next time for company. Baked French Toast Casserole 03/31/2008 at 07:21pm User: Jan from Alta Loma, CA User Rating: so easy to make and delecious! I have made it on several occasions and always get asked forthe recipe! thank you Paula I can't get it right? 03/30/2008 at 07:40pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I tried tis at a friend's brunch and it was amazing! I've tried making it twice and can't get it right, it's too soggy and I've tried cooking it longer, any advice?? heavy and heavenly 03/30/2008 at 03:27pm User: Evie from Glyfada, Greece, VA User Rating: a verrrry rich beginning to the day- i made this for brunch and all us girls kept going back for more! excellent, but heavy. Easter Gone Wild!!! 03/30/2008 at 01:13pm User: Diana from Lake Forest, CA User Rating: What can I say. This is awesome! I prepaired this for Easter Brunch, Everyone went wild over this Baked French Toast. It was like "Butta" This was a huge hit. Easy to prepair. I cant wait to make this again. Thanks Paula for all your fabulious recipes Your the best. Diana, Lake Forest, CA mmm mmm good! 03/29/2008 at 06:34pm User: Michelle from Binghamton, NY User Rating: Oh my! This was absolutely delish! A big hit at our Easter Brunch -- enjoyed by young and old! Will make this again and will not wait for a special occasion! Great for a crowd! 03/29/2008 at 10:59am User: Jenny from Austin, TX User Rating: I made this for my husband's office and it was a hit. I love the fact that you do everything the night before. What a smell to wake up to! 03/29/2008 at 10:21am User: Shannon from somers point, NJ User Rating: This is just a comforting dish. My kids and their friends got to wake up to the warm smell of this dish. They were amazed at the flavor. I was amazed at how easy this was. I hate making french toast and pancakes. This was so easy. Thanks Paula! EASY & can be lower fat/sugar & lactose free 03/28/2008 at 12:15pm User: Elaine from Duson, LA User Rating: Sooooo Good! I used 2 1/2 cups of Lactose free, low fat milk & 22 small containers of sugar free, no fat, vanilla soy yogurt, & 6 eggbeaters. I added 2 teaspoons each of vanilla & almond extracts. For the topping, I used 1 stick of butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar & 1/2 cup splenda. It was awesome. Great to fix for company the next morning, especially when it can be done the night before. I also Pam'd my pan instead of buttering it. Everyone loved it...even the picky kids !!! 03/27/2008 at 01:40pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This was the easiest receipe. I made it for Easter Brunch after a big egg hunt and everyone loved it. With brunch it's hard to make a good one that you can make ahead, but this you make the night before and bake 40 mins before chow time. I wasn't stuck cooking while everyone minged. I used cinnamon raisen bread and warmed up some fresh strawberries with syrup. I made a big pan to scrambled eggs, breakfast turkey sausage and baked home fries with peppers and onions. And of course, MIMOSAS. It was easy and non-draining. yummy 03/27/2008 at 01:32pm User: Anonymous User Rating: loved it Best way to make French Toast Ever! 03/25/2008 at 08:23pm User: Jacque from Tempe, AZ User Rating: This was by far, the most intriguing dish I found to try and I thought it would be difficult and not come out right. However, if I made any mistakes in the prep of it, you sure couldn't tell. It was delicious as the day is long! Foolproof and family pleasing. I recieved raves from everyone when I served it with ham slices an fruit. Thank you Paula, keep 'em comin'! Heavenly 03/25/2008 at 03:45pm User: Kimberly from Concord, CA User Rating: My kids love this! I it made for our last camping trip. My son asked me why I don't cook this way at home....Go figure! yum 03/25/2008 at 03:30pm User: Anonymous User Rating: yum NYC Easter 03/25/2008 at 12:37pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Made this for an Easter brunch and it was fantastic! Everyone loved it!! Definitely making it again. OMG --- This is so good!! 03/24/2008 at 08:41pm User: Bethany from Dixon , CA User Rating: This is so good and super easy to make!! I love Paula Dean! Delicious and easy 03/24/2008 at 08:37pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Fabulous recipe.... really delicious - fairly easy to make, too! Didnt have time to sit overnight! 03/24/2008 at 09:02am User: Glenda from Naples, FL User Rating: I goofed up! I had a nice brunch planned for Easter, I had to work all day Saturday and by the time I made it home late, forgot that I had to make this ahead and let it sit overnight in the refrigerator! I panicked when I re-read the recipe on Sunday morning! I had made this one time before and forgot that it had to sit overnight. I went for it anyway; I had the time to let it sit for two hours before baking. I did dredge each bread slice in the egg mixture prior to placing them in the dish for a few minutes and then I poured the egg mixture on top. Sitting overnight is not needed! In fact, I only let it set for the two hours and it turned out MUCH better then when it sat all night! I got tons of compliments! In the future I will not prepare this one ahead; instead I will do it the same morning. Thanks Paula, this one is great either way! Wonderful and easy 03/23/2008 at 07:56pm User: Jessica from Fort Lauderdale, FL User Rating: This was so easy to make and such a great dish to serve at our Easter brunch. Paula does it again. Absolutely delicious and just follow her recipe exactly. You and your guests will love it (it makes A LOT!!). How to serve? 03/23/2008 at 05:06pm User: Lori from Edgewood, WA User Rating: I followed the printed recipe with the exception of following advice from other people's reviews. I dipped the bread in the egg mixture before putting it in the well buttered pan and then poured the rest of the mixture over the top. I cut the butter in half for the praline mixture and now think maybe I should not have. It may have spread out a little more with better coverage if I had. Otherwise, this recipe turned out well and was very tasty. My question is: How do you serve this dish? Do you try and extract it in slices to serve or do you just stick a spoon in it like a casserole? I have never had a dish like this before so am not sure the best way to serve. I tried to separate it into slices with not too great of success. Love Paula, she is the best. Best breakfast ever! 03/22/2008 at 04:59pm User: Samantha from Clearwater, FL User Rating: Have made this several times and it always comes out great! The last time I decided to make it, turns out I didn't have some of the ingredients but it still turned out awesome! Substituted cinnamon hazelnut coffee creamer for 1/2 of the half and half, almonds for the pecans and dark corn syrup for the light corn syrup. Fantastic, a must try! baked french toast 03/22/2008 at 03:57pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I followed the recipe as directed and this dish turned out horrible. The bread was soggy and seemed like the egg was not cooked. What a waste of ingredients. Even better than expected! 03/22/2008 at 02:46pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Made this for an Easter brunch - a success on the first attempt, and a lovely addition to our meal! I was skeptical about the praline topping, but it really made the dish (a bit of syrup on top is also lovely, but don't over-do it). I used 6 eggs + 2 cups of half-and-half, otherwise following the instructions to let it sit overnight. There was no sogginess once the dish had cooled to serving temperature. Crowd pleaser 03/21/2008 at 12:54pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I made this last year for our Easter brunch. It was an amazing hit and I am doing it again this year. I can taste it already!! Almost a Great Recipe 03/21/2008 at 11:46am User: Peter from Columbia, MD User Rating: This is a terrific breakfast casserole, except...except that the praline topping no more requires two sticks of butter than I need wings. One stick is quite sufficient. Awesome French Toast 03/20/2008 at 10:42am User: Lisa from South Elgin, IL User Rating: This is the best french toast I have every had and the most fun to make. I have so much making this and just as much fun eating it. perfect Easter brunch dish 03/17/2008 at 11:39am User: Anonymous User Rating: I made this recipe last Easter for a big crowd and plan to repeat this year. I used panettone instead of french bread and would highly recommend it - makes the recipe a bit more special. The praline topping is delicious but very sweet so I use about 1/3 less than called for. Warm maple syrup puts this recipe over the top! Loved it! 03/15/2008 at 11:30pm User: cora from the woodlands, TX User Rating: I made this today for our Block Party Easter Egg Hunt and brunch pot luck. I ommited the pecans in case of allergies at home I will use them. It tastes similar to bread pudding w/ crunchy topping. It was a BIG hit I got so may compliments, I said its not mine its Paule Deen's and they were like we love her and how much butter does it have? It was easy and I loved that it soaked overnight! Awesome!!! 03/06/2008 at 03:23pm User: Sheri from Sumter, SC User Rating: Love, love, love this recipe!!! It tastes awesome. I have made it several times and I have learned that when I want to make it the same day, you can cut your bread into cubes instead of slices and it works great. That way you can have it the same day if you don't have the time to prepare it ahead, or if you are like me and want it when you want it!!! Delicious! 02/26/2008 at 07:56pm User: Heidi from Santee, CA User Rating: This is a great dish! What I like most is that you can prepare it for a brunch the night before so that you aren't stuck in the kitchen away from all of the fun. We used it for Christmas morning and the whole family loved it. Delicious French Toast 02/26/2008 at 01:06pm User: Terry from Westville, IN User Rating: A Big Hit for Sunday Brunch! Sinful! 02/25/2008 at 01:43pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This dish is absolutely sinful. I was a GM of a golf course and for part of the year we served brunch on Sat & Sun. This was a staple on our brunch buffet and all of our customers RAVED about it. We ALWAYS ran out of this. Not as good as I thought... 02/23/2008 at 01:11pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I thought it was much too greasy and eggy. The topping was wonderful though. Tasty but be careful 02/17/2008 at 06:19pm User: dorothy from williston, VT User Rating: I've made this twice. First time with a soft french bread, the kind you buy in the bread section of the supermarket. It was too soggy. I had the sense to pour off the extra egg mix before baking and it turned out good but the second time I tried it I began my search for challah bread and they didn't have it in the market I was in, so I bought a hard, denser, bakery type french bread. I soaked the pieces, turning the hard top part upside down and soaking it specifically so it wouldn't be too hard when cooked. I dipped each piece and then poured a little egg mixture over the top. I used the suggestion of the reviewer who said she had made it ten times. For the denser bread, it was not quite enough eggy mixture. I was quite disappointed when it was served because when I ate my serving I found that the top was still really hard. The eggy mixture had not softened it even though it had sat in the fridge for a good 12 hours overnight. My initial sense was to buy a challah bread cause it's denser than the soft french bread but not crusty. Next time, and there will be a next time (cause the praline topping is so yummy)I will buy the challah bread even if I have to go to two or three different stores to buy it. I might try the 5 egg version that one of the other reviewers suggested. Having made it both ways, I prefer to dip the bread, then pour a little over the top. If you see a little bit of eggy mixture in the bottom of the pan, don't worry cause it will get absorbed by morning. If your bread is still swimming in egg goop the next morning, pour it off otherwise you'll have soggy bread on the bottom and it's no fun to serve something like this and not get rave reviews. I add extra cinnamon. Don't use too much bread, follow the ounces recommended in the recipe, otherwise the flavor is diminished. Live and learn, right? love it!!! 02/11/2008 at 09:01pm User: Michelle from Pasadena, MD User Rating: what a hit! the whole family enjoyed! Delicious Breakfast 02/04/2008 at 06:03pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This recipe is a must try! I made it as a special breakfast treat and it came out delicious. For those who had problems with the bread being too soggy, I would recommend using slightly old bread(my loaf was 5 days old)so that it'll soak up the liquid without becoming soggy. Don't count on any leftovers 01/31/2008 at 02:26pm User: Kim from Russells Point, OH User Rating: I made this to take to work for a breakfast carry-in, and it was almost all gone by 8:00 am! I think the next time I'll go easy on the half-and-half, but other than that, it was great. The praline topping was sweet and crunchy, didn't even need the maple syrup. Thanks for a great recipe! Good, but... 01/30/2008 at 11:12pm User: Jennifer from Pittsburgh, PA User Rating: The edges burned! Boyfriend LOVED it tho, so that's why the 4 starts. Next time I will put it in for less time. Also, used 4 eggs, 1 cup milk, 1 cup half and half, lots of cinnamon. 8 eggs would have been way too much. Jack Pot 01/28/2008 at 01:26pm User: donna from brooklyn, NY User Rating: I made this for a potluck brunch. i was a little apprehensive because i didn't try it out before hand and i thought it would be soggy...It was perfect. What i hit. With a little tweaking, this is a great recipe. 01/28/2008 at 03:42am User: Anonymous User Rating: I also had problems with the soggyness - spacing out the slices of bread probably would have solved the problem - but the parts that weren't soggy were delicious. I didn't use maple syrup either - like everyone else said, it didn't need it. I did top it with a little dab of light whip cream and it tasted like a dessert, not breakfast - it was delicious! Definitely a good idea. Delish and EASY! 01/25/2008 at 02:03pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I don't cook often, but this dish was easy and fun to make and bring to work. I substituted ciabatta bread which was a hit. so so recipe 01/24/2008 at 11:42am User: Sarah from Elizabethtown , KY User Rating: I was very excited to try this recipe and I followed it as printed. My kids age 8 & 6 did not like this recipe and my husband said it was good but he did not want to eat it again. I thought it was just so so. Very Good 01/23/2008 at 08:45pm User: Brett from Thornton, CO User Rating: The family really liked this. Makes alot more than what a family of four can eat. I really wanted to like this...but 01/22/2008 at 10:53pm User: Emily from ny, NY User Rating: I really wanted to like this but the 2 times I had it at my friend's house it was WAY TOO soggy for me and my family. I loved the topping but we like our French Toast to be firmer. This was more like pudding. Other people at the brunch liked it but I couldnt finish it. I will try the other tips listed as the potential is very great. All time favorite recipe! 01/15/2008 at 06:08pm User: Meredith from Huntsville, AL User Rating: This is so easy to make the night before and the leftovers are delicious. Having this on Christmas morning is my new favorite tradition! Yum! 01/15/2008 at 12:31am User: Dora from Redmond, WA User Rating: This is my favorite french toast recipe! I made it for our Christmas brunch and it was incredible. Best French Toast Bake 01/14/2008 at 07:49am User: Lynnae from Winston-Salem, NC User Rating: It is our tradition to have a couple of different kinds of breakfast bakes, and mimosa's on Christmas morning. I made this French Toast Casserole this past Christmas, and my family went nuts over it. Now they want me to make it more often. I guess I'll have to start a new tradition, and make it for every special holiday, ie, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, etc. sweet, easy, but a little too much egg 01/14/2008 at 05:51am User: Darlene from Houston, TX User Rating: I made the recipe with Challah bread, but I should have read everyone's comments. The casserole puffed up nicely, but there was too much of an egg taste. I will try again with some of everyone's suggestions. It still was a greatn alternative to standard french toast! ugh 01/13/2008 at 06:26pm User: Kary from Mobile, AL User Rating: Maybe I did something wrong? Mine wouldn't cook all of the way - tried it twice. What a disappointment on New Years morning. I didn't even try to serve it. The edges were cooked, but I surely wasn't impressed with the flavor of even that part. How in the world can there be such variations in this recipe and its flavor? Tried twice, mushy both times 01/13/2008 at 01:06pm User: Anonymous User Rating: The first time I made this recipe I followed it exactly using french bread and it came out really soggy. The second time I made it, I used challah bread and dipped the bread instead of pouring the mixture over it and cooked it for an additional 20 minutes- it still soggy parts. I won't be making this again. Yummy 01/12/2008 at 08:18pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I made this recipe for a house full of Christmas guests and they loved it! The only thing I would do is bake it slightly longer (maybe 5 min.) Sooo good 01/12/2008 at 04:51pm User: Thomas from schaumburg, IL User Rating: This recipe is unbelievable thanks Paula Its a meal and dessert in one! 01/12/2008 at 01:07pm User: Anonymous User Rating: We all loved this. I was concerned about mushy bread but it puffed right up and had a wonderful coating on top and bottom. It did stick some so be generous with the butter. YUMMY 01/12/2008 at 12:44pm User: Anonymous User Rating: It was really yummy! I think next time I will half the receipe for the topping. It was on the sweet side for me. Breakfast bread pudding 01/12/2008 at 12:39pm User: Deborah from North Richland Hills, TX User Rating: The Baked French Toast was very tasty but I think it was more like bread pudding that is the reason for four stars Disappointing 01/10/2008 at 08:51am User: Anonymous User Rating: Very disappointing. I thought I would be WOWed by this recipe and I wasn't. I have had better. Great make ahead breakfast dish 01/09/2008 at 09:53pm User: Sherry from Plainfield, IL User Rating: Made this both for christmas and new years day breakfast. Glad i read the reviews prior to making the dish. I followed the recommendations of other reviewers--used 6 eggs, discarded about 1/2 cup of egg mixture, dunked the bread in the mixture before putting in the baking dish (then poured remaining mixture over the slices) and reduced butter in the praline topping to 1 stick. I sprinkled orange zest over the bread slices to brighten the flavor. Served with stewed berries with a touch of lemon juice rather than syrup as praline topping is very sweet. Folks raved about the dish and it was so easy to prepare! Great people pleaser 01/09/2008 at 12:37pm User: Judi from Floral City, FL User Rating: Everytime I make this French Toast with Praline Topping, I get awesome reviews. People just can't get over how great this recipe it. I get asked to make this over and over, and it really is easy to make. Great Job Paula, Thanks ! excellent casserole 01/07/2008 at 05:44pm User: Marie from Marietta, GA User Rating: Made this during our christmas holiday. Was very easy and very delicious. I will make it again and again. Sinfully Delicious!!! 01/06/2008 at 11:16pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This should be the recipe of the year! Just to die for. I've made this dish for the past few years for any special occasion (christmas brunch, easter brunch, girls get together, etc.) I dream about this dish all day long. Yummy! Phenomenal! 01/06/2008 at 05:10pm User: Dee from Palmetto Bay, FL User Rating: Going strong for Christmas two years now and a true crowd pleaser. OMG!!! 01/06/2008 at 03:32pm User: Shari from Valencia, CA User Rating: OMG!!! That's the comment I wrote on this recipe before re-filing it! My husband and I both agreed it was a keeper after gorging ourselves with this sweet treat...two mornings in a row! Your guests will melt over this one!!! Excellent 01/03/2008 at 10:46am User: Anonymous User Rating: Made for New Years Day Brunch - the crowd went wild. Everyone wanted the recipe. Make sure you butter the dish well so it doesn't stick after baking. yummmmmmy 01/02/2008 at 04:28pm User: cindy from campbell, OH User Rating: i made this recipe it was so delicious, and so simple only i did not use the praline topping i topped it off with sliced apples and strawberries Senior Breakfast Smash! 12/31/2007 at 08:03pm User: Barbara from Somersworth, NH User Rating: I needed to come up with something new for the annual Senior Staff Breakfast put on by the regular staff. I found this recipe on line and gave it a try. Oh my goodness....everyone raved about how wonderful it was and they all had to have the recipe. It was a definite hit. Simply to prepare, leave overnight, and pop it in the oven the next morning. How easy! I am making it for my family for New Year's Day breakfast. Yummy! No Brunch is Complete Without It! 12/31/2007 at 06:52pm User: Alicen from Milpitas, CA User Rating: I have been making this recipe now for over two years, and it is always a crowd favorite. I don't modify the recipe and have never had a problem with "sogginess". The only thing I change is the elimination of the maple syrup--it doesn't need it and stands on its own. This is one of the BEST recipes I have downloaded from this site. Too Soggy for my taste 12/30/2007 at 09:55pm User: Sommer from Charlotte, NC User Rating: I used day-old stale french bread (even though the recipe didn't call for it) and this casserole still turned out too soggy. If you don't like soggy french toast don't try this recipe. Wonderful!! Great Taste!! 12/30/2007 at 03:47pm User: Teresa from Wichita, KS User Rating: I have made this several times for my family and they all love it. If you like french toast you will love this casserole. It is easy to make and well worth the wait. Unbelievable! 12/30/2007 at 08:24am User: Julie from Miami, FL User Rating: I have made this several times and it is a huge hit with my family; defintely a favorite breakfast recipe. There is never anything left. I do cut the liquids in half and it has always turned out perfectly. Always a hit! 12/29/2007 at 10:56pm User: Nicole from Louisa, VA User Rating: I have made this for many work functions and family gatherings. It is very easy to throw together. The only thing I changed is that I use 2 loaves of bread. It makes it go farther and it makes it less soupy which I had happen a couple of times when there was more egg mixture than bread. Other than that this is PERFECT! New brunch traditon 12/28/2007 at 01:43pm User: linda from charlotte, NC User Rating: This dish will always be on our menu for Christmas day brunch and many other times also. So easy to make and delicious. yummy 12/28/2007 at 08:54am User: GEORGE from oak ridge, NJ User Rating: Paula, Ilove to watch you cook and I made this casserole for my family on Christmas morning. It was a hit girl. I do agree with some of the other raters that the recipe could be reduced without losing any of the great taste. A Fantastic Crowd Pleaser 12/28/2007 at 08:02am User: Harmony from Denver, CO User Rating: Made ahead of time for a birthday brunch and it was just perfect as is. Many guests didn't even reach for the syrup. christmas Morning Tradition 12/27/2007 at 10:57pm User: Suzanne from Vernon, CT User Rating: I have been making this for Christmas breakfast or sometimes brunch for the last 5 years now. It is expected to be there just like Turkey at Thanksgiving. It is a crowd pleaser from 1 -101 yrs old. I love any recipe that you can make ahead and than bake 45 min right to your table. DEEEEE-LISH! mmm good! 12/27/2007 at 10:48pm User: Annette from Yucaipa, CA User Rating: I tried this for Christmas breakfast and boy was it great! I even had to make a couple of copies for guests. I think I have a new Christmas breakfast tradition. Thanks Paula for an wonderful treat! New Christmas Tradition 12/27/2007 at 06:22pm User: Phyllis from Kingsley WA Australia, WA User Rating: The preparation was easy. The flavor was amazing. Presentation excellent. I wondered how the toast would "puff up" but it did. The family loved it and have insisted it be a new Christmas morning tradition! AWESOME 12/27/2007 at 05:08pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This is one of my favorite recipes I make. It is a little rich for some...but I never have leftovers. Simply Sensational 12/26/2007 at 05:18pm User: Lillian from Chicago, IL User Rating: My first time in trying a Paula Deen recipe and it was a huge success. My family just loved it...we had it for Christmas brunch. Came out fluffy, beautiful browned, didn't need any syrup. Definitely a keeper! Very Disappointed 12/26/2007 at 10:14am User: Anonymous User Rating: I had high hopes for this recipe. I read the other reiviews and did many of the things other cooks suggested to avoid sogginess. It turned out terribly. The bottom was soggy but the top was too crispy. I made it for Christmas morning, and after taking two bites, my boys asked if they could please have cereal. What an insult. I will not make this again. Delicious and Easy 12/25/2007 at 09:04pm User: Tracy from Portland, OR User Rating: This recipe is FANTASTIC!!! It's sooooo easy and it's absolutely delicious! I made it for Christmas breakfast for a family of picky eaters and they ALL LOVED IT!! Spectacular French Toast 12/25/2007 at 08:51pm User: LINDA from Harrodsburg, KY User Rating: Melt in your mouth delicious. With or without syrup it put smiles on the faces of all brunch guests including the one who prepared this dish. Way to go Paula. This is a keeper for sure. Lance C. 12/25/2007 at 03:19am User: Lance from Rancho Murieta, CA User Rating: Super easy and flawless. I was concerned when reading the few negative posts, but I have now prepared this dish twice with rave reviews. I used it at a brunch I catered over the weekend and the guests loved it. I used Challah bread the second time out with great results. Hope I can find it in heaven! 12/21/2007 at 10:49pm User: carmen from mount holly, NC User Rating: I made this recipe (did not altered it at all)for a Christmas brunch party, everyone loved it. I had plenty leftovers of everything I cooked except this dish. The best part of this recipe is that you prepare it the night before and all you do is put it in the oven in the morning, giving you lots of extra time for anything else you need to get done. I'm planning to make it again for Christmas morning and enjoy it with my family! Brunch Fave!! 12/21/2007 at 02:28pm User: Paula from redlands, CA User Rating: This is a staple for our Father's Day Brunch. Everyone loves it!! I made it w/o the pecans 12/20/2007 at 09:46pm User: Kelly from Ramona, CA User Rating: And it was still really good. It tasted just like french toast which I usually have trouble making when cooking it on the stove. It didn't make a good leftover though...got soggy. For the people saying there was too much liquid. I let mine soak for about 24 hours in the fridge and had no problem. The bread absorbed almost all of the liquid. Fantastic 12/20/2007 at 10:54am User: Cathy from Monticello, FL User Rating: My guests couldn't get enough of the casserole. Everyone wanted the recipe. Paula's fabulous baked french toast casserole 12/20/2007 at 12:11am User: Sally from Oroville, CA User Rating: I made the casserole for a breakfast of 12 hungry committee members, it was to say the least fabulous. The ease of preperation was much appreciated. It tasted and presented wonderfully. Each member asked for the recipe, then told their friends at church who in turn wanted the recipe. If Paula was close I would give her a big hug in thanks for letting everyone think I am such a great cook. Excellent 12/19/2007 at 02:18pm User: MINDI from VALDOSTA, GA User Rating: This is a deliciously easy recipe. But, I found that I had to cook it twice as long as the recipe suggested. Other than that, it's a keeper and loved by my entire family! Yummm 12/17/2007 at 02:39pm User: Karen from Lancaster, CA User Rating: I made it first with the original recipe & it did come out a little soggy. So I tried it again & this time reduced the eggs to 6 & the half & half by 1 cup & also added a little more cinnamon with the eggs. I also used only 1 1/4 stick of butter. It came out great & everyone loved it at my our church brunch. Crowd Pleaser!! 12/10/2007 at 12:09pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Just made this for a holiday brunch...what a hit!! I followed the suggestion of dipping the bread into the egg mixture first, then pouring the remaining mixture over the casserole. It worked out perfectly. The casserole was light and delicious...didn't need any syrup. mjreviews 12/09/2007 at 01:11pm User: Mary Jo from Alpharetta, GA User Rating: The Paula Dean's French Toast Casserole is wonderfull. The taste delicious, the looks ummy, and all who have eaten it have raved about it. I fixed it for the Men's Bible Breakfast group and they want it again. They don't usually say much but "Thank you" but this dish made them all say...."delicious, do it again." Thank you for all your wonderful ideas and recipes. MJreviews Baked french toast 12/08/2007 at 09:34pm User: cindy from lubbock, TX User Rating: My family absolutely love this recipe. They even like it for desert without the praline topping and maple syrup. Instead we put vanilla ice cream on it. out of this world! 12/04/2007 at 03:44pm User: dixie from Springfield, MO User Rating: I have been making this recipe for Christmas morning the past 2 years or so and I just had to comment on it. It is amazing! Everyone loves it so much. Thank you Paula (again!) Dixie Christmas Comfort 12/04/2007 at 12:52pm User: pam from hartville, OH User Rating: Every Christmas morning, I love to have my family wake up to the wonderful smells of a special Christmas Breakfast. Based on my family's favorite, I will keep the recipes and make them every year. My children and husband are finicky about what they eat and this is one of their favorites. The best part about this delicious French Toast Casserole is that it is so easy to make and can be made the day before. I like to use a very good quality madagascar vanilla that just makes a world of difference. If you toast your pecans before to make the topping, the oils will take it over the top. This is a keeper and a "must have" recipe. Thanks Paula!!!!! Sweet and delicious 12/03/2007 at 03:31pm User: AMY from CHAPIN, SC User Rating: This is the way to eat French Toast. It is very sweet, but wonderful. I can't see eating this every week, but definitely for special occasions or if you're in the mood for a sweet breakfast or brunch. You will definitely want to try this if you have guest. They will be impressed! Taste was great 12/03/2007 at 02:51pm User: Anonymous User Rating: The taste was great, I loved it. Baked French Toast Casserole w/Maple Syrup 12/01/2007 at 02:13am User: Sue from Newport News, VA User Rating: I read the reviews and dipped the bread as some suggested. I poured any remaining liquid over the bread in the casserole. The casserole looked picture perfect when it came out of the oven. It cooked well and puffed up as stated. The smell of it cooking was delightful. Unfortunately, it did not have much flavor. Regular french toast is better than this and doesn't have all the fattening calories. I give this recipe 5 stars on presentation but only 2 stars on taste. harveyems9 11/27/2007 at 11:29pm User: DENISE from ELKTON, MD User Rating: I used this recipe for Thanksgiving brunch this year. It was delicious. Everyone raved about it and wanted the recipe. It was easy to make. I will definetely make this again. POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO SOGGINESS 11/27/2007 at 08:44pm User: rosemary from holland, MI User Rating: WOW! NEVER READ SO MANY COMMENTS ON ONE RECIPE. AS A "FOODY" I MAY HAVE A SOLUTION TO THE MANY COMMENTS ABOUT SOGGINESS IN THIS RECIPE. PERHAPS IT IS THE BREAD. THIS IS THE ONLY ITEM THAT COULD BE A VARIABLE. SOME BREADS ARE DENSER THAN OTHERS AND WOULD SOAK UP MORE OF THE LIQUID. YOU NEED TO PURCHASE "GOOD" FRENCH BREAD FROM A BAKERY OR MAYBE CHALLAH, OR PANNETONE. IF YOU GET YOUR BREAD FROM THE GROCERY STORE IT MAY BE MORE AIRY AND NOT ABLE TO HOLD SO MUCH OF THE CUSTARD MIXTURE. Nutrition Conscious? 11/27/2007 at 04:11pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Although I have no question about its appeal, the dish could be as tasty but healthier with a more careful choice ingredients. I find all of Ms. Deen's recipes overly rich with high fat, and/or high sugar/sodium content. Muriel L. Quintin Out of this World!! 11/26/2007 at 07:09am User: Karen from Corpus Christi, TX User Rating: This was such a hit with the family that I keep it prepared at all times. Needless to say, it doesn't hang around long!! Needs a few modifications 11/24/2007 at 01:13pm User: Anonymous User Rating: The flavor was great but the middle was a little mushy. Next time I will dunk the slices in the egg mixture instead of pouring it over the top, as a few of the reviewers suggested. Then I think it will be perfect! DELICIOUS 11/23/2007 at 02:31pm User: KAREN from Roseville, CA User Rating: After reading the reviews of this recipe, I decided to cube the bread instead of leaving it in slices. I decreased the eggs to 6. I also doubled the vanilla and increased the cinnamon as I love cinnamon. My casserole came out delicious and not soggy. It baked in 40-45 minutes and came out of the oven smelling wonderful. It's a definite must. A nice twist on French Toast 11/18/2007 at 10:10pm User: barbara from orlando, FL User Rating: Super easy to make. Great for large groups. My husband loved it so much he make it for his fire station. My only tip is do not layer the bread, it seemed a bit mushy to me. Next time I will lay it flat. And I love that most of it is prepared the night before, so that the next morning it can be popped in the oven. Don't bother with the syrup...it doesn't need it. It was just as good the following morning reheated in the microwave. My husband liked it so much, he took it to work for he and a co-worker. I'll be making it again this week, but instead, I'll prepare it in the morning so that we can enjoy it for dinner. Yum! 10/13/2007 at 11:15am User: Sarah from Hermitage, TN User Rating: During baking, the butter started to pool in the center of the dish - I spooned it over the rest of the dish midway through baking. great recipe, but.... 10/12/2007 at 01:57pm User: Anonymous User Rating: It was great when it was first published in the 1996 Savannah Junior League cookbook, p 127.
