I add white chocolate chips (1/2 bag) and a 1/2 cup of Craisins, plus a dash of cinnamon. I also use whole wheat flour. It is by far my most requested recipe! I always take it for office gatherings, and my brother-in-law requests it every time he is in town. It's easy and delicious!

User: KAthy from San Jose, CA    User Rating:
I've been using this recipe for more than 5 years and I've gotten many compliments and requests. I tend to use large super ripe bananas so if I'm making for and older crowd, I usually use 3/4 cup of sugar rather than 1 cup. But, this is 1 of the 3 recipes that I remember by heart because I've made it so many times. Great recipe!!

Excellent! Moist, flavorful and yummy! I added a dash of cinnamon and a tad bit of grated nutmeg (I love a little fresh spice). Oh so good! I tasted the batter - I usually do NOT like banana bread batter - and even the batter was delicious.

Best banana bread I've ever tasted!

User: Linny from Wakefield, MA    User Rating:
This is without a doubt the best recipe for banana bread I have ever made - or tasted! A plus for me was that it has no dairy in it, which can be a problem for some people. It was fairly quick to prepare and comes out as good without nuts as with. The smell while it's cooking is indescribable! I've made a lot of banana bread in my time and highly recommend this one.

User: Twyla from Washington, DC    User Rating:
This walnut bread recipe is worth every layer of instruction you go through to get it just right. The composition produces a bread whose each ingredient enhance and bring out the next. I love to way the vanilla just danced with the banana. I tried this with white and whole wheat flour at different times and found both to be very good. My preference was white flour. Whole wheat is healthier and nice even at that.

I love the flavor of this banana nut bread, but it's a little heavy for me. Also, I thought I buttered the pan thoroughly but at 55 minutes and letting the loaf pan rest for 5 minutes, the bottom of the bread stuck to the pan!

User: jani from montclair, CA    User Rating:
I took this recipe and changed it up a bit to make, what I feel is the perfect banana bread. I just used shortening instead of butter (nothing new). But then I used for my sweetness 1/2 cp white sug., 1/2 cp brown sug. and 2-3 tbs orange blossom honey. It wasn't too sweet for us but you could scale down the sugar some. And that orange bloosom in the backround is too delish!!

I'm not even that crazy about bananas, but I quite enjoyed this recipe. They make great muffins! I made them with pecans one time, and raisins another, and used whole wheat flour both times, which worked very well. I decreased the butter amount by 25% since others had commented that the bread came out greasy, and I tend to try to cook on the healthier side. They were still moist and delicious!

User: Carmen from Chesapeake, VA    User Rating:
I have never made banana bread before and was a little skeptical about this one because there weren't any "spices" in it. But it looked really easy to make, which it was, so I tried it. This will definitely be one of those recipes that I will make forever. I loved it. I was little nervous while it was cooking though. Around 30 minutes, it started to smell and look like it was done. But it wasn't and I left it in for about another 20 minutes and it was perfect. So I probably wouldn't have cooked it for the full 55 minutes, but 48-50 was just perfect. I would highly recommend this recipe.

This banana bread is out of this world. Every time I make it I get tons of compliments. I brought a loaf to work yesterday and it was gone by the end of the day. The only suggestion I would make is to cover it with aluminum foil for the first half of its bake time because it gets dark really quickly. SUPERB!

Burned

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
The middle was still raw and the outside was burned. Maybe my oven cooks fast? I've just never had this happen with anything I've cooked before. I double checked everything, 350 degrees, 55 minutes. I checked it at 35 minutes and the outside of the loaf looked completely done, but the middle was still raw, and then at 55 minutes, it was burned on the outside and the inside was still not completely done. Maybe I'd try this recipe with muffins, but I wasn't too pleased with the result.

I am a college student who is trying to make the best of a small food budget. I've been trying to find ways to use everything quickly enough before experation date pass, and with cooking for just me and my roomate that isn't always easy. When a few bananas went bad I turned to foodnetwork to find a recipe that would taste just like my mom's awesome banana walnut bread... this recipe even topped that! I'd recommend it to anyone, even if you're not too skilled in the kitchen!

Even Better than My BEST Recipe
06/04/2007 at 05:24pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I've always had a GREAT recipe for banana bread that uses sour cream to increase the moistness however I just decided to see if there was another recipe out there that could beat it and I FOUND IT. My friends asked me why I was trying another recipe because the one I had was already great but when my family tried this bread they LIKED IT EVEN MORE. I used chocolate chips instead of the walnuts and it was a hit. It doesn't seem to rise like a real bread but the taste compensates for the "look" of the finished product.

I toasted the walnuts, added nutmeg and cinnamon and instead of one cup regular sugar I used half a cup of splenda, 1/4 cup honey and 1/4 cup brown sugar. I also added 1 cup of plain bran flakes soaked in 1/2 cup milk. The result was so delicious and moist and I didn't miss the sugar. Recommend.

Yes, I've tried many banana bread recipes, and came across this one. Tried it and it came out so good, not mushy or tough. I used 3 very ripe bananas and 1 slightly ripe one. I also added a dash of cinnamon and baked it for 1 hour. I sliced it and wrapped each slice in plastic wrap and kept in the fridge. My husband loved it so much and even brought it to work this morning.

Delicious, moist, and perfectly sweet. I baked this exactly as written, including adding the walnuts. I'm not a walnut fan but they were a tasty addition. I was surprised it had no cinnamon or any other spice or flavoring (besides vanilla extract and obviously, bananas) but to my surprise it didn't need it. The finished product is perfect. Nothing is more unappetizing in my opinion than a greasy cake or quick bread, but this bread was perfect, its moist without being greasy. Definitely a must-bake and one I will keep for eternity in my recipe arsenal. ;)

basic bread recipe is good, however i changed it a tad, the flour, I used bread flour, I upped the vanilla to 1 teaspoon and added 2 teaspoons frangelico liquor, I also used more bananas I changed that to 1&1/2 cups. This changed the moisture level and the bread needs to butter and tastes EXCELLENT the first day.

The only caution I would suggest is to check whether it is done at about 45 minutes. I ended up overcooking mine at 55 - but I didn't know better. It was still very good. I'm sure we will make this any time our bananas get over ripe. We enjoyed it a lot!

I haven't made banana bread in years, but needed something for a crowd that wouldn't be sickly sweet as I was also serving a fairly rich dessert and wanted an alternative. I had all the ingredients to hand. It's cheap and cheerful and a total crowd pleaser. It literally takes minutes to mix up in the Kitchen Aid. The added bonus is that it fills the house with the most lovely baking smells. I recommend it as a perfect accompaniment when inviting friends round for a cup of coffee. Oh, by the way, the only change I made is that I added a good dash of cinnamon. This one is a keeper that I'll use over and over again.

I followed the recipe exactly. At around 40 minutes the outside was starting to look over done so I removed it from the oven and let cool as directed. The finished product was a loaf that was overdone on the outside and underdone on the inside. I'm not sure what went wrong. I suppose it could be my oven, but I have not had this kind of problem before.

This recipe, easy to prepare with easy to find ingredients works well during the holiday season. With a little guidance, this could be an ideal recipe for children to begin to learn the art of baking. To add a little extra zip, I add one cup of frozen fresh cranberries at the last minute, which explode during the last few minutes of baking, leaving the bread moister than regular. An excellent way to celebrate Christmas morning!!!

Very easy to make. I didn't have butter, so used vegetable oil instead. The bonus was I didn't have to get out the mixer or beat anything. Just dump all ingredients, mix and bake. Being a chocoholic, I reduced sugar by half and added 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1 tsp. cinnamon. Yummy!

The cake came out moist and perfect. I added a little less sugar (almost a 1/4 c less) for my taste as I like banana bread not too sweet. The cake still came out perfectly sweet from the sugars of the overripe bananas.

This recipe is very moist and delicious! I modified it to be cooked as muffins (using paper cups and no butter to de-stick). When doing muffins, cook for about 23 minutes, remove immediately from oven, and allow to cool with the top-side facing down. Makes 24 muffins (using 2.5 inch baking cups).

This is a very yummy banana desert like bread. It is very moist due to the butter and bananas. It uses very little flower so it isn't really bread-like. It was my first try on my Mother's Day KitchenAid stand mixer and my almost 3 year old helped. It is simple and a perfect way to use up ripe bananas. I'll do it again!
